I'll share what I've experienced and learned about what Burbank is like for seniors.
Burbank is a great city for seniors to live in. The city is small enough for easy mobility, with medical facilities nearby and a relatively safe environment. Most importantly, the weather is nice. It's generally warm and clear throughout the year, making it much more comfortable for those with joint issues compared to the winters in Korea.
Burbank Parks and Recreation offers a variety of programs for seniors. The Senior Center provides fitness classes, art classes, dance lessons, computer classes, and social gatherings. Many of the programs are very affordable or even free. You can check the list of senior programs on the Burbank City website (burbankca.gov).
There are also senior transportation support services like Burbank On The Move. This service assists seniors who have difficulty driving with medical appointments, shopping, and other essential travel. The Burbank Paratransit service is also available for those with disabilities or who have trouble using public transportation. Knowing about these services in advance can be very helpful later on.
Healthcare access is also good. Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center is located in Burbank, and Kaiser Permanente and Adventist Health are nearby. You can find geriatricians or utilize Medicare services well in this area. Don't forget to enroll in Medicare when you turn 65.
For Korean seniors, church communities are especially important. Korean Methodist and Presbyterian churches in Burbank and nearby Glendale offer programs for the elderly. It's a valuable space to communicate in Korean and connect with people who share the same culture.
Be aware of financial benefits for seniors as well. Seniors aged 65 and older can receive discounts on Burbank Parks and Recreation programs, some transportation discounts, and the Senior Property Tax Deferral program. Check your eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) as well.
Burbank is a good environment for seniors who want to live independently. It's conveniently located, with medical facilities nearby, a safe atmosphere, and pleasant weather. There is a Korean community, providing opportunities to communicate in Korean. Living in Burbank as a senior can be more comfortable and enjoyable than you might think.
