When talking about generational distinctions, "Generation Z" and the term "Digital Natives" always come up.
This refers to a generation that has grown up in a digital environment with the internet, smartphones, and social media. If previous generations remember the days of plugging in phone lines to connect to the internet, it is not an exaggeration to say that Generation Z has been with Wi-Fi since birth. Smartphones were like toys in their hands, and YouTube videos were more familiar than storybooks.
The reason Generation Z is truly called 'digital natives' is that for them, digital is not a 'tool' but a 'space.' For example, while the Millennial generation learned new cultures through social media, Generation Z creates that culture directly within social media. A short video on TikTok can change trends, and a single photo on Instagram can redefine a brand's image. They hardly feel the boundary between offline and online. Meeting friends and chatting in person is as natural as voice chatting on Discord.
Another interesting point is Generation Z's 'sense of information.' In the past, searching for information was a process of study or exploration, but now algorithms understand me first and suggest information. Therefore, it is more accurate to say that they 'select' information rather than 'search' for it. They have developed the ability to quickly judge what is real and what suits them amidst an overwhelming amount of information.
As a result, they are very sensitive to advertising. They quickly notice inauthentic content and skip it. This is why it is difficult for brands to capture the attention of Generation Z. For them, 'real stories' that naturally emerge in daily life hold more persuasive power than crafted advertisements.
Moreover, Generation Z 'internalizes' technology rather than just 'utilizing' it. For example, they express their tastes and worldviews through Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, and showcase their individuality through digital avatars or profile designs. This is not just for fun; it is a way to show their existence. In the past, they thought "the real me" and "the online me" were different, but now those two have completely merged. In fact, many find their real selves through their digital identities.
Of course, these generational traits are not always positive. The rapid flow of information can lead to decreased concentration, and self-esteem can be shaken in the culture of comparison on social media. However, at the same time, they are the generation with the power to understand and change the world the fastest.
Ultimately, the reason Generation Z is called Digital Natives is not just because they were born in the age of technology, but because they have made that technology a 'natural part of life.'
For previous generations, digital was a tool, but for them, it is as essential as air. Therefore, their world is always connected, changing, and new. And perhaps this signifies something beyond a simple generational difference. Just as we breathe underwater, Generation Z lives within the digital realm.
