There are songs that, just a few seconds into the intro on the radio while driving, make you think, "Ah, this song."
For me, Ace of Base's "The Sign" is exactly that.
The moment that unique keyboard intro starts playing, my hand instinctively reaches for the volume dial.
When this song first hit, I was living in Seoul, a recent college graduate who had just completed military service and was starting my career.
That melody, which played several times a day on the radio during my commute, is still etched in my brain over 30 years later.
Ace of Base is actually a group that set incredible records.
For many Koreans, Ace of Base is just remembered as "Oh, that Swedish group?"
"The Sign" was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 annual chart in 1994.
Not just number one, but it was the best-selling single in the U.S. that year.
In the American market, this level of success was not just a hit; it was a cultural phenomenon.
Interestingly, it can be compared to ABBA. ABBA is legendary worldwide, but their performance on the American Billboard was surprisingly underwhelming.
However, Ace of Base was stronger in the U.S. than ABBA, at least in terms of short-term chart records. The fact is that the strongest breakthrough of Swedish pop in the American market was not ABBA, but Ace of Base.
At the time, music critics often labeled them as the "successors to ABBA."They were both Swedish, featured female vocals prominently, and had male composers, which made them seem similar at first glance.
But the music itself is a completely different genre. ABBA is centered around classic pop melodies, while Ace of Base emerged from the early 90s European club scene with a Eurotechno style. Their unique sound, a mix of reggae rhythms and synth-pop, is distinct from ABBA's lineage.
But why did their peak period end so quickly? It turns out that the overwhelming success of their first album, "The Sign," became a double-edged sword. Their follow-up works had moderate success but failed to recreate that explosive impact.
There were also issues with the group's lineup. They originally started as a five-member group, but as early members left, the four-member version we know today was formed. There were rumors in the industry at the time about complicated internal matters. When team chemistry falters, it's common for the second album to struggle in any field.
So, I believe that the reason "The Sign" remains alive even after 30 years is not just because the song is good. The time and place where I first heard that song, the atmosphere of that era, are compressed and stored within the melody.Ace of Base may have been a short-lived group, but they have been permanently preserved through "The Sign."
That is more important than their Billboard number one record.
Right now, somewhere, that intro is playing on someone's car radio.
And that person is likely turning up the volume, reminiscing about 30 years ago, just like I am.
