Palisades Park, New Jersey (also known as Pal Park), is a neighborhood where education discussions are quite common among Korean parents.

With many Korean tutoring centers and a strong Korean community, those looking to move here often think, "Surely the schools must be good, right?"

However, once you start looking into schools for your child, you hear a lot of different opinions than you might expect. In particular, parents tend to be quite candid about Palisades Park Jr./Sr. High School. While not many would say it's a terrible school, it's common to hear, "If circumstances allowed, I would prefer to send my child to a different school district."

The most frequently mentioned reason is academic performance. According to New Jersey educational data and various school rating sites, the achievement levels on the state standardized tests for math and English are lower than the New Jersey average, and on rating sites like GreatSchools and Niche, it generally receives a below-average rating. Of course, these scores don't tell the whole story about a school, but for parents who are highly invested in education, it's understandably a concern.

Particularly, Pal Park's biggest challenge is that its comparison schools are quite strong. Just a little further north are some of New Jersey's top public school districts, such as Tenafly, Cresskill, Closter, and Leonia. These schools offer a much wider variety of AP courses, and their average SAT scores and college admission rates are also quite high. Given the comparison within Bergen County, it's true that Palisades Park High School can seem somewhat lacking.

Discussions about school facilities and budgets also come up frequently. With many older buildings and a budget that isn't as generous as those in nearby affluent districts, there are opinions that there are differences in the latest facilities and various educational programs. In U.S. college admissions, sports, music, volunteer work, and various club activities are also important evaluation factors, and the scale of these extracurricular programs is often seen as somewhat limited compared to surrounding prestigious districts.

Another characteristic is the student composition. Pal Park is an area where new immigrant families are consistently moving in, so the proportion of ESL (English as a Second Language) programs is relatively high. While this system is essential for students who need to adapt to English, parents or students who are already proficient in English and want advanced courses may feel that there are fewer options for AP or Honors classes.

As a result, among Korean parents, it's not uncommon for children to attend Pal Park until elementary school and then move to a different district when transitioning to middle or high school, or to challenge themselves with magnet schools like Bergen County Academies or choose private schools. Given the high interest in education in the area, there is a strategic approach to school selection.

That said, this doesn't mean that the school is necessarily bad. In fact, because it's not a very large school, the relationship between teachers and students tends to be closer, and managing grades can be relatively easier. Students who might struggle to maintain a high rank in a highly competitive district may find it easier to maintain a good GPA here while preparing for college admissions. Ultimately, what environment suits our child best seems to be the most important criterion.

In my opinion, it's better to decide on Pal Park not just based on the 'Korean living infrastructure' but also considering the child's academic goals. If a student aims for top-tier college admission, it's essential to compare with surrounding prestigious districts or magnet schools, and if stable school life and community are important, then Palisades Park Jr./Sr. High School can be a viable option. Ultimately, it's crucial to find a school that best matches our child's personality and goals rather than deciding solely based on the school's name.
