Lexington is fundamentally a car-dependent city. Unlike LA or New York, it lacks a subway system, and while there is a bus system, its routes and frequency are limited.
If you move to Lexington, you quickly need to understand that having a car is not an option but a necessity.
However, the traffic stress is not as severe as in major cities.
Looking at the main road structure in Lexington, New Circle Road (KY-4) serves as a ring road that circulates around the downtown area.
Main radial roads connecting the outskirts to the downtown area link to this circular road. I-64 (toward Louisville) and I-75 (north toward Cincinnati and Lexington) meet on the outskirts of Lexington, while Man o' War Boulevard crosses the southern commercial and residential districts.
Rush hour congestion occurs on New Circle Road and major intersections from 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM.
While it's not as extreme as in major cities, areas around the UK campus and Hamburg experience lines during commuting times.
LexTran is the public bus system in Lexington. With limited routes and intervals of 30 minutes to an hour, relying solely on buses can be inconvenient.
Shuttles within the UK campus operate separately. Bicycle lanes are gradually increasing, so on nice days, it's possible to bike around the UK area or downtown for short distances.
Parking in Lexington is mostly free or very inexpensive, except for some areas downtown. Parking lots at apartments and shopping malls are also ample. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to drive approximately 80 miles to Louisville via I-64, about 85 miles to Cincinnati via I-75, and about 3 hours to Nashville.
Uber and Lyft also operate in Lexington. However, the wait times may be longer compared to major cities, which can be inconvenient when in a hurry.
To live in Lexington, having a car is essential, and you should include vehicle maintenance costs (insurance, fuel, maintenance) in your budget planning.
The advantage of transportation in Lexington is the lack of severe congestion like in major cities, while the downside is that living without a car is difficult.
Most Lexington residents accept and adapt to these pros and cons in their daily lives.
