If you've decided to move to Birmingham, preparing for your initial settlement is just as important as unpacking your belongings.
In the U.S., simply changing your address doesn't mean your life starts right away; you need to complete various administrative procedures and establish your living arrangements one by one.
Knowing the order of tasks in advance will make starting your new life much easier.
The first thing you need to do is choose a place to live. While downtown Birmingham isn't bad, I generally recommend suburban areas for newcomers. Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, and Homewood have excellent safety and school districts, but they tend to have higher home prices and rents. In contrast, Hoover, Gardendale, and Irondale are relatively more affordable and convenient, making them popular choices among many newcomers.
Before deciding on a home, it's advisable to drive during rush hour to see the actual commute times instead of just looking at a map. In the U.S., distances may seem short, but traffic during peak hours can take longer than expected.
Once you've signed a lease, you should immediately apply for electricity, gas, and internet services. Electricity can be set up through Alabama Power, natural gas through Spire, and AT&T and Spectrum are the main internet service providers. However, availability may vary by area, so it's best to check before signing a contract.
If you plan to drive, don't forget to obtain an Alabama driver's license. If you're moving from another state, you should change to an Alabama driver's license within 30 days of residency. The license issuance is handled at the ALEA (Alabama Law Enforcement Agency) office, and you'll need to surrender your previous license.
You also need to register your vehicle separately. Alabama operates a county-based registration system, so vehicle registration and related tasks are handled by the Jefferson County Tax Office in Birmingham.
If you have children, it's best to register them for school as soon as possible. Having proof of address, vaccination records, and previous school transcripts ready will speed up the process significantly. Notably, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, and Homewood each operate their own school districts, so the school you can register for may vary based on your residence address.
If you're Korean, connecting with the Korean community can be very helpful. While Birmingham's Korean population isn't very large, there are Korean churches and small Korean businesses centered around the Hoover area. Newcomers often find valuable information about living, hospitals, auto repair shops, and schools here.
If you need Korean ingredients, Super Oriental Market is one of the most frequented Asian markets. You can find most basic Korean foods, seasonings, and frozen items, which will help with your initial settlement.
You should also quickly prepare for health insurance. If your job doesn't provide insurance, check your eligibility for ACA health insurance through Healthcare.gov. UAB Medicine, the largest healthcare provider in the area, offers a variety of specialized services and is a hospital many residents use.
Opening a bank account in advance can make it easier to set up direct deposit for your paycheck or automatic payments. Many people use local banks like Regions Bank or national chains, so it's a good idea to check if there are branches near your home and workplace.
Even if you usually drive, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with the BJCTA MAX bus routes. Public transportation can be surprisingly useful in case of car repairs or unexpected situations.
The first month in a new city can pass by in a blur. However, if you methodically prepare for everything from choosing a residence to applying for utilities, changing your driver's license, registering your vehicle, enrolling your children in school, obtaining health insurance, and setting up a bank account, you'll find that settling into Birmingham happens more quickly than you might expect. Take your time to complete the checklist and prepare for your new beginning with ease.
