Springfield, MO is the third largest city in Missouri, with a population of about 160,000.
Located at the northern edge of the Ozark Plateau, it features gently rolling hills, with the city center sitting at an elevation of about 410 meters (1,345 feet). The city is nicknamed the 'Queen City of the Ozarks' and has long served as a cultural and commercial hub for the region.
Since its official establishment in 1838, Springfield functioned as a strategic point in southwestern Missouri during the Civil War, and the Battle of Wilson's Creek took place nearby. Today, the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is located about 13 miles southwest of Springfield and is a historical site operated by the National Park Service (NPS), attracting visitors every year. It is a must-visit for those interested in Civil War history.
One of the most famous tourist attractions is the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World flagship store, which is the headquarters and birthplace of this large outdoor sporting goods chain. This store goes beyond a simple shopping space, featuring an indoor aquarium, taxidermy exhibits, and waterfall sculptures, making it a sort of theme park. It attracts over 4 million visitors annually for tourism purposes, and there is no admission fee. The building spans approximately 300,000 square feet.
Missouri State University is located in downtown Springfield and adds vibrancy to the city with around 23,000 enrolled students. The area around the university, including the MSU's Jordan Valley Innovation Center, has developed a college-town atmosphere with restaurants, cafes, and small shops. Ozarks Technical Community College is also a significant two-year college that provides vocational training in the region.

For shopping and dining, the Battlefield Mall, one of the largest indoor shopping malls in the Mid-America region, is convenient.
Battlefield Mall features anchor department stores like Macy's, Dillard's, and JC Penney, along with various food and beverage options. The C-Street (Commercial Street) historic district near Mizoura Street is popular for weekend outings, with independent cafes, galleries, and vintage shops.
If you want to enjoy nature, nearby natural spaces like Bennett Spring State Park, Lake Springfield, and Fellows Lake are recommended. Lake Springfield, in particular, is about a 15-minute drive from downtown and offers fishing, walking trails, and park facilities. Due to the Ozark terrain, there are also many karst (limestone) caves nearby, and the Silver Dollar City theme park, which includes Marvel Cave, is about a 45-minute drive to Branson. Many visitors plan to include Branson in their itinerary when visiting Springfield.
Transportation options include the Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF), located north of the city, with direct or connecting flights from American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. Renting a car is almost essential, and while there is a city bus system, coverage is limited. Interstate 44 runs east-west, and US-65 runs north-south, making it easy to travel to surrounding areas.
Accommodation options include major chain hotels like Holiday Inn, Hyatt Place, and Best Western, which are located around downtown and the Battlefield Road commercial area. Short-term rentals like Airbnb are also popular, offering a variety of choices based on budget. Average lodging costs vary by season, but mid-range hotels typically range from $100 to $160 per night.
The climate is humid continental, with hot, humid summers and cold winters with moderate snowfall. The average high temperature in July is about 33 degrees Celsius (91°F), while the average low in January is about -5 degrees Celsius (23°F). Visiting in spring and fall allows you to enjoy the pleasant weather along with the Ozarks' fall foliage or cherry blossom season. During tornado season (spring to early summer), it is advisable to closely monitor local weather forecasts.
