Shaw University is one of the oldest historically black private universities in the South, located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Established in 1865, this school holds great significance in the history of Black education in the United States.
Especially right after the Civil War, it is known as a university that opened the doors to higher education for newly freed Black individuals.
At that time, it was called 'Shaw Collegiate Institute,' and the current Shaw University has produced numerous Black leaders and educators as it has grown. Shaw University began with a clear mission to change society through education. Initially focused on theology and education, it now offers a variety of majors including business, social work, health sciences, and computer science.
The majority of students are Black, and it is a space where students from diverse backgrounds come together to learn and grow. The campus atmosphere, while small in size, has a warm and familial feel. The relationship between professors and students is close, and the entire school strives to practice the philosophy of "education that helps each other within the community."
Historically, Shaw University has also been a 'center of change.' During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, students from this university gathered to become the seeds of the Sit-in movement, which had a significant impact on American history. The organization that Shaw students led at that time was the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee).
This organization carried out nonviolent resistance movements for the enhancement of Black human rights and equality, becoming the spark for a nationwide civil rights movement. Therefore, even today, the phrase "change begins with a small voice" is often seen on the Shaw University campus. This saying symbolizes the spirit of the school.
The city of Raleigh also provides a pretty good environment for college life. As the capital of North Carolina, it has a stable and clean city atmosphere, and nearby are renowned universities such as North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina (UNC Chapel Hill), making it a region with a high emphasis on education.
The school may not be large, but the sense of community felt within it is very strong. Graduates often say, "Shaw was not just a school, but a family." Professors remember each student's name, and it is common for them to help directly when difficulties arise. Recently, the school has also been focusing on digital education and global exchanges, with online classes and overseas internship programs gradually expanding.
Shaw University is not just an old school, but a 'witness of history' that has upheld the meaning of equality and education within American society. Therefore, walking through Shaw University, what you feel between the neat red brick buildings is not just the tranquility of a campus, but the belief that "education can change the world."
