Billings is the most populous city in the state of Montana.
According to the 2020 U.S. Census, it has a population of 117,000 residents.
Located in south-central Montana, Billings sits near the Yellowstone River and features impressive sandstone cliffs known as the Rimrocks to the north, offering a unique natural landscape.
Billings is nicknamed the 'Magic City,' a name that originated from its rapid growth just months after the railroad was established in 1882.
Geographically, Billings is about 100 miles from the Wyoming state line and approximately 130 miles (about 210 km) from Yellowstone National Park, making it a central hub for travel in Montana and Wyoming.
At an elevation of about 3,123 feet (approximately 952 m), it experiences a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The average annual precipitation is around 14 inches, making it relatively dry.
In terms of tourism, Billings offers a variety of attractions. The most prominent landmark in downtown Billings is the Rimrocks, which can be accessed via Rimrocks Drive, just a few minutes from the city center, leading to an open viewpoint overlooking the entire city.
On top of these cliffs is Capitol Rock, a historical site that connects Canada and Mexico.
Additionally, at the summit of the cliffs is Pictograph Cave State Park, where ancient rock art left by Native Americans thousands of years ago is preserved, making it a popular destination for history enthusiasts.

In the downtown area, the Western Heritage Center and the Yellowstone County Museum provide insights into the history of westward expansion in Montana and Native American culture.
The Billings Symphony Orchestra regularly performs, and the MetraPark Arena and Convention Center in downtown host various sports events, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year. The largest shopping mall in the area, Rimrock Mall, is located near downtown and features major brand stores.
In terms of transportation, Billings Logan International Airport (Airport Code: BIL) is located just 2 miles from downtown, making it very accessible. Major airlines such as Delta, United, Alaska Airlines, and American Airlines operate flights connecting to major cities like Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Minneapolis. Billings also serves as a key stop for road travelers, located at the intersection of Interstate 90 (I-90) and Interstate 94 (I-94).
Billings has a diverse food culture. Downtown features a variety of restaurants, from fine dining to casual bars and grills, with steak dishes made from Montana beef being particularly famous. Several local breweries and craft breweries operate in the area, offering handcrafted beers made with Montana's clean water. There are also some Asian restaurants where you can find Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai cuisine.
Accommodation options are concentrated around downtown and the I-90 highway, with major chain hotels like Hilton, Marriott, Best Western, and Holiday Inn available at various price points, as well as short-term rental options like Airbnb.
Billings serves as an excellent base camp for visiting major attractions such as Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, and Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
For first-time visitors to Billings, it is recommended to prioritize visits to Rimrocks Drive, Pictograph Cave State Park, and the Western Heritage Center in the city center. If time allows, consider a day trip or an overnight stay to explore Little Bighorn Battlefield (about 65 miles away) or drive towards Yellowstone National Park. Billings, where Montana's vast nature and the history of the westward expansion coexist, is one of the must-visit cities in the American West.
