Living in San Diego, it's hard to avoid conversations about cocktails.
With such great weather, it's quite natural to enjoy a drink at the beach or a rooftop bar.
One of my personal favorite cocktails is the Tequila Sunrise.
This cocktail is characterized by its colors that resemble a sunrise in the glass.
I first learned about this cocktail at a small gathering at a friend's house.
When I saw there was orange juice and tequila in the fridge, someone suggested, "How about we make a Tequila Sunrise?"
I was surprised at how simple it was to make when I tried it for the first time.
First, let's talk about the ingredients you need. There are just three basic ingredients.
Tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup.
If you have ice and an orange slice or cherry for garnish, that's even better.
You don't need any special mixer; just a glass you have at home will do.
The method of making it is not difficult either. First, fill a tall glass with plenty of ice. The more ice, the cooler and tastier the cocktail will be. Then, pour about 45ml of tequila. You can think of it as roughly one shot. Slowly pour the orange juice into the glass until it's almost full.
At this point, you just have tequila and orange juice. Now, the final step is important. Very slowly pour a little grenadine syrup. Usually, about a spoonful is enough. This syrup is heavy, so it sinks to the bottom. As it does, the bottom of the glass starts to turn red.
The key here is not to mix it. If you leave it as is, the top will be orange, and the bottom will be red, creating a color that looks like the sun rising over the ocean. That's why it's called a Sunrise. Finally, placing an orange slice on the rim of the glass or adding a cherry enhances the presentation.
This cocktail pairs especially well in San Diego. At sunset by the beach, the sky blends orange and red, which is quite similar to the colors in the glass. Perhaps that's why you often see people ordering this cocktail at beachside bars.
Personally, I think it creates a nice atmosphere even when making it at home.
The ingredients are simple to find at the grocery store, and it only takes a few minutes to make. When friends come over, making them a drink usually gets a positive reaction. I often hear, "This is prettier than I expected."
There's also an interesting point. This cocktail has a pretty smooth taste. Since it contains orange juice, the alcohol flavor isn't too strong. Because of this, even those who are trying cocktails for the first time can enjoy it without feeling overwhelmed. Of course, that doesn't mean it's weak. Since it contains tequila, you can get tipsy faster than you might think.
Sometimes, I make it alone at home. In the evening, with the window open and music playing, making and sipping a Tequila Sunrise gives me a bit of a vacation vibe. I think the fun of this cocktail is that you can change the atmosphere without having to travel far.
