In seasons with high levels of fine dust and allergy concerns, the quality of indoor air is very important.

At the center of this is the HVAC system filter. If the filter does not perform its role, dust, mold, and pollen can enter our respiratory system.

Therefore, regular filter changes are essential! I will explain in detail how to change the HVAC filter that anyone can do at home.

When should you change the HVAC filter?

  • Typically, it is basic to change it every 3 months.

  • If you have pets or if people frequently come and go in your home, it is recommended to change it every month to two months.

  • If the filter color has changed to gray or brown, and dust has accumulated, it is time to change it.

What you need

  • New filter (check the size of the existing filter and buy the same specification)

  • Screwdriver (if necessary)

  • Gloves (definitely if you have a dust allergy!)

How to change the filter

  1. Check the location of the HVAC unit
It is usually located behind a vent attached to the wall, on the ceiling, or near the indoor unit.
The filter is often located near the 'return air duct'.

  2. Turn off the power
For safety, please turn off the power to the HVAC system. You can turn it off at the thermostat or at the breaker.

  3. Remove the existing filter
Open the filter cover and carefully remove the old filter.
You can see the size (e.g., 16x25x1) written on the edge or side of the removed filter.
Taking a picture of it or remembering it makes it easier to buy the filter next time!

  4. Check the filter direction
The filter has an arrow marked "AIR FLOW".
You must insert it so that the arrow points in the direction of the airflow (= towards the HVAC unit).
If inserted the other way, performance will drop significantly!

  5. Install the new filter
Insert it gently in the correct direction and close the cover.
If necessary, tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

  6. Turn the power back on
Once everything is installed, turn the power on and check if it is operating normally.

Additional tips

  • Write the filter replacement date on your calendar or set a smartphone reminder so you don't forget.

  • HEPA filters or allergy-specific filters may be a bit more expensive, but they provide significant benefits.

  • Adding a little air freshener for filters each time you change them is also a good idea to keep things smelling nice.

The HVAC filter is what you should prioritize before the air purifier.

Changing it neatly will improve your breathing and better protect your family's health.
