These days, there is a growing interest in health. The word 'cancer' can make your heart sink, but did you know there are foods that may help suppress or kill cancer cells?
Of course, the "foods that kill cancer cells" mentioned here are not miracle cures. However, various scientific studies have shown that these foods can have antioxidant effects, reduce inflammation, or help prevent abnormal cell proliferation. In other words, they play a supportive role in cancer prevention and suppression.
Mushrooms – Nature's Natural Immune Booster
Mushrooms are more than just delicious ingredients. They are considered one of the representative superfoods for cancer prevention. Varieties like shiitake, reishi, and turkey tail mushrooms have traditionally been used to boost immunity, and modern medicine is actively researching them.
One of the most studied components is β-glucan, which is known to activate immune cells, reduce inflammation in the body, and inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. In particular, shiitake mushrooms contain lentinan, which is even used as an adjunct treatment for stomach cancer in Japan.
Another interesting one is the turkey tail mushroom. It has been noted by the FDA in the U.S. as an adjunct cancer treatment. Research has shown that it helps restore immunity in patients with breast cancer, lung cancer, and cervical cancer.
Broccoli and Cruciferous Vegetables
This is very well-known. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage contain a compound called sulforaphane, which can block the growth of cancer cells and even induce apoptosis in some experiments. Its effects have been particularly noted in studies related to colon cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer.
I always keep broccoli in my fridge these days. A little oil and air-frying make it surprisingly tasty!
Garlic, Green Onions, Onions – Strongly Flavored Ingredients
These are also staples in cancer prevention diets. Garlic contains a powerful antioxidant called allicin, which is good for boosting immune function. In fact, studies have shown that regions where garlic is frequently consumed have lower rates of stomach cancer. Personally, I find it a bit hard to eat raw garlic, so I use roasted garlic with rice or add plenty of garlic when making kimchi.
Tomatoes – The Star is Lycopene
Tomatoes are especially good for men, as studies have shown that the antioxidant lycopene is effective in preventing prostate cancer. Here's an important point! The absorption rate of lycopene is higher in cooked tomatoes than in raw ones. So, dishes like pasta sauce or tomato stew are much more beneficial.
Green Tea – The Magic of Polyphenols
Green tea contains a powerful polyphenol called EGCG, which is known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and prevent cell transformation. In fact, statistics show that regions in Japan and China where green tea is consumed frequently have lower cancer rates. Drinking one or two cups a day, not too strong, is good. However, those sensitive to caffeine should avoid it in the evening.
Turmeric – The Power in Its Yellow Color
Do you like curry? Turmeric, which is used in curry, contains a very powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer component called curcumin. There are many experimental results showing that curcumin affects various cancer cells, including breast cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer.
However, curcumin is not easily absorbed in the body, so it is said that taking it with black pepper increases absorption by more than 20 times. So, I've been adding a little more pepper when making curry lately. It enhances the flavor and is good for health, a win-win!
Blueberries – The Small-Sized Superstar
Blueberries are synonymous with antioxidants. They are particularly rich in anthocyanins, which can help prevent cell aging and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Buying frozen blueberries allows for long-term storage, making them great to add to yogurt or oatmeal. These days, I sprinkle blueberries, chia seeds, and a little honey on my oatmeal every morning, and it feels both tasty and healthy.
Again, the foods mentioned above do not directly "treat" cancer.
However, just by slightly changing your eating habits, you can greatly help your body maintain its health. Everyone can have cancer cells, but the issue is how they become activated, right?
Choosing less irritating and more natural ingredients might be a sure way to prevent it.
When you go grocery shopping tonight, try putting garlic, broccoli, and blueberries in your cart.
Health starts from your dining table.
