The colorful tail design and red wing logo associated with Asiana Airlines will soon become a part of history.
At one time, it was a symbol that could be recognized immediately at foreign airports as "Asiana."
With the ongoing merger with Korean Air, the Asiana Airlines brand will disappear starting in December 2026.
This is not just a simple merger; the name, logo, and livery will all be integrated into Korean Air.
In simple terms, the Asiana we know today will completely vanish.
Some aircraft have already begun the process of removing the Kumho Asiana Group's English lettering and wing logo.
On the surface, it may seem like a small change, but it is actually the first step in brand consolidation.
Over time, the colorful livery will gradually disappear, and Korean Air's new corporate identity will be applied.
This colorful design has been the representative image of Asiana since 2006.
It was a symbol that captured a Korean essence and had considerable recognition overseas. Therefore, this change feels like the end of an era.
Looking back at the beginnings of Asiana Airlines adds even more significance. In 1988, the Kumho Group launched Asiana Airlines while pursuing the establishment of a second national airline.
It created a competitive landscape in a market previously monopolized by Korean Air, changing the course of the Korean aviation industry. For over 30 years, it has been a core subsidiary of the Kumho Asiana Group.
However, as time passed, circumstances changed. Management issues and financial deterioration led to the sale process, and Korean Air eventually acquired it. On December 11, 2024, Korean Air officially became a subsidiary of Hanjin Group by paying the acquisition price.
For about two years, it will operate as a subsidiary. While it will maintain the Asiana name on the surface, internal integration will be underway. Then, starting December 17, 2026, the two companies will fully merge into one. At that point, the name Asiana Airlines itself will disappear, marking the end of a 38-year history.
In the future, the airline will be restructured into a single large airline centered around Korean Air. While this will enhance competitiveness in terms of scale, there is also a sense of loss in seeing one of the two familiar brands disappear.
Especially, the aircraft livery and logo are not just decorations. They are images connected to many people's travel memories. Memories of traveling abroad for the first time on an Asiana flight, family vacations, business trips, and various moments are all tied to that colorful tail.
Ultimately, Asiana Airlines has entered a stage where its brand is being completely consolidated in the process of merging with Korean Air.
It is always sad to see something familiar disappear. But at the same time, it marks the beginning of a new system.
It is a bit disappointing that there is not much time left to see the colorful tail at the airport.
