Leonia is located right next to New York, making it just a 20-minute drive to Manhattan, yet you won't feel the hustle and bustle of the city at all. It feels like you are stepping back to observe the noise of a busy city from a distance.
Situated just west of the George Washington Bridge, it has excellent commuting access and is adjacent to popular cities like Fort Lee, Englewood, and Teaneck. This makes it very convenient for transportation, shopping, and education.
Leonia is a small town with a population of about ten thousand, considered a quaint village within Bergen County. However, this also means the town has a warm atmosphere, and many residents know each other. The town center is lined with old houses, and walking along the tree-lined streets feels like being in a suburban movie setting. Most houses are single-family homes with spacious yards, making it ideal for families.
Leonia High School is recognized for its high academic achievement and active participation from teachers and parents. With a smaller student body, there is a friendly atmosphere where teachers and students know each other well, providing a warmer educational environment than larger school districts. For this reason, many families with children are moving in, and the housing market has been steadily rising.
Leonia, being a city with good access to New York, has housing prices that are somewhat higher than the Bergen County average. However, it is still reasonable compared to areas like Fort Lee or Englewood Cliffs, which are densely populated with luxury homes. While there are many older houses, most are well-maintained, and recently, remodeling and new constructions have been steadily increasing. The focus is more on houses than apartments, making it suitable for those who prefer a quiet environment with privacy. Rent varies by the number of rooms, but for a 2-bedroom, it is around $2,500 per month.
Another charm of Leonia is that the town is surrounded by greenery, and with Palisades Interstate Park nearby, it is great for hiking or picnicking on weekends. Despite being close to the city, the air is clean, and large trees line the streets like shadows. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, and in autumn, the foliage turns the alleys red, making the four seasons distinctly felt. In the evenings, it is common to see residents walking their dogs.
Transportation is also very convenient. Route 46 and I-95, which connect directly to the George Washington Bridge, are nearby, making it easy to commute to New York, and there are various bus routes. It takes less than 30 minutes to get to Manhattan's Port Authority, so many people live without a car. However, during rush hours, the roads leading to the bridge can get congested, so many residents leave early or use public transportation.
Within the town, there are small supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, a library, and a public swimming pool, and just a 5-minute drive away in Fort Lee or Englewood, you can find large markets, shopping malls, Korean grocery stores, and hospitals. With a nearby Korean community, it is easy to find Korean restaurants, beauty salons, and churches. Because of this, Leonia is recognized as a "settlement-friendly town" for Korean immigrants.
In winter, it often snows, and summers are hot and humid, but it cools down after mid-August. Spring and autumn are truly beautiful. Especially in October, during the foliage season, the entire town turns red and yellow, making even a simple walk soothing. When it snows in winter, the town quietly transforms into a scene from a Christmas postcard.
Living in Leonia is not just about being "near New York"; it is a life that enjoys the convenience of the city and the relaxation of the suburbs at the same time.
