When Torrance comes up, there are always people asking why so many Koreans live here.
It's nothing special; it's just that after living here, we found it to be a nice place to settle down.
I also debated a lot at first whether to go to LA's Koreatown or Irvine.
But in the end, I settled in Torrance, and even now, I think it was a good choice.
The biggest reason is the Korean infrastructure. There are Korean markets, restaurants, hospitals, real estate, and churches all available.
It doesn't feel as densely packed as Koreatown, but you can find most of what you need for daily life.
Shopping at places like H Mart is convenient. Even if your English is a bit lacking, it's still manageable to settle in without much discomfort.
This may sound easy, but once you live here, you realize how important it is.
The second reason is the school district. The Torrance Unified School District is considered quite good in California.
You may have heard of schools like West High and South High. They have high graduation rates and stable academic performance.
So families with children often move here based on the school district. There's also El Camino College nearby, which makes it easy to prepare for college.

The third reason is safety. Living in LA, you quickly realize how important this is.
Torrance is a relatively quiet and orderly neighborhood. You can walk around at night without feeling too unsafe, which is definitely comforting for families.
The homes are mostly single-family houses, creating a calm atmosphere.
The fourth reason is location. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get to Los Angeles International Airport. This is actually a fantastic condition. Whether in the U.S. or Korea, the airport is in our neighborhood. A friend living in Fresno envies this the most; he has to ask for rides to the airport and it costs him about $400 round trip if he takes a taxi, haha.
And whether it's downtown LA, Long Beach, or Irvine, everything is connected. Even if your job location changes, it's manageable.
Lastly, we can't forget about the weather. Torrance is near the ocean, so the temperatures are mild.
Even in summer, there are many days when you don't need to turn on the AC, making it less hot than inland, and winters are not extremely cold either.
It's not like Korea, where you stress over the weather in all four seasons, so just this one factor improves the quality of life.
In summary, Torrance is not a perfect city. The housing prices are not cheap.
However, it balances the important aspects that Koreans consider when living in the U.S.: convenience, education, safety, location, and weather.
That's why once you move here, you tend to stay for a long time. Once you live here, you understand why so many people gather here.
