The Washington DC metropolitan area has three airports and major train stations, making it one of the transportation hubs in the United States.
The convenience of your trip greatly depends on which airport you fly from and how you get around.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the closest airport to DC. Located in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River, it is only 5 miles (8 km) from downtown DC. It is directly connected to the WMATA Metro Blue and Yellow Lines, allowing you to reach downtown in about 15-20 minutes via public transportation.
While it is the most convenient airport, it mainly operates short-haul routes connecting East Coast cities. International flights are limited, and for long-haul international flights, you will need to use Dulles or BWI. Korean Air and Asiana Airlines operate direct flights from Dulles Airport.
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is located 26 miles (42 km) away in Virginia. As an international hub airport, it offers a variety of international routes, including direct flights to Korea.
Public transportation includes the WMATA Metro Silver Line, which connects to Dulles, taking about 45-60 minutes from downtown Washington without transfers. Using Uber or Lyft from downtown DC takes about 40-60 minutes (up to over an hour depending on traffic), costing around $40-70. Many travelers opt for Dulles for long trips or international travel.
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is located 30 miles (48 km) north of DC in Maryland. It serves as a hub for Southwest Airlines, particularly for domestic low-cost routes. Public transportation options include taking the MARC train or Amtrak to BWI train station and then using the airport shuttle, or directly using Uber/Lyft. The Uber fare from downtown DC is about $50-80.
Union Station is the main train station in DC, serving Amtrak, Maryland MARC trains, and Virginia VRE trains. The Amtrak Northeast Corridor route connecting New York, Philadelphia, and Boston departs from this station, and the high-speed Acela train reaches New York in about 2 hours and 50 minutes. Union Station itself is a grand historic building built in 1908, featuring a complex space with restaurants, shopping, and a movie theater.
The WMATA Metro Red Line connects directly here. For those who frequently travel to New York, Amtrak can often be more convenient than flying in terms of city accessibility. The transportation hub infrastructure in DC ranks among the best in American cities, which is clearly one of the advantages of living in DC.
