It is no longer sufficient to simply call Annandale a 'Korean town'; its appearance has become much more diverse. According to 2026 statistics, the population of Annandale is maintained at around 40,000 to 45,000, and the ethnic composition is quite interesting.
While the Korean community remains strong, there has been a noticeable increase in the Hispanic and Vietnamese populations, as well as young white-collar workers in recent years. The white population makes up about 40%, Asians account for 25-30%, and Hispanics comprise around 25%, creating a very balanced demographic.
The charm of this place is its 'comfort.' When you go to the grocery store, you hear Korean being spoken, there are Hispanic families living next door, and at the children's school, various races mix together. This means that issues like racism feel like stories from another country here. There is a sense of community among immigrants who are all working hard in their own ways.
In fact, as of 2026, there are claims that the physical center of the Korean business district has shifted slightly towards Centreville or Chantilly. However, Annandale still holds the pride of being the 'original home.'
Remember when I mentioned 'tofu and H-Mart' in San Antonio? Annandale has long surpassed that stage. Not only is there an H-Mart in Annandale, but also many well-known Korean franchises, banks, hospitals, and law offices... everything operates perfectly in Korean.
Especially recently, due to the 'K-food' craze, it has become a spectacle to see foreigners lining up longer than Koreans at Korean restaurants. As a father in my 40s, I feel a strange sense of pride when I see young Americans using chopsticks to eat tteokbokki while taking my family out for galbi on the weekends.
The greatest advantage of Annandale is its 'location.' I-495 (Capital Beltway): this key highway that circles Washington D.C. runs through Annandale, and I-66: the direct route into D.C. is nearby. Additionally, Little River Turnpike: the road that connects Alexandria to Fairfax is the lifeline of Annandale. However, even in 2026, the traffic hell during rush hours remains unchanged.
For commuters heading to Washington D.C. or Arlington, Annandale is the best place to live, but the congestion experienced every morning at the entrance to Route 495 feels like a test of patience.
Fortunately, Fairfax County is steadily expanding its public transportation system (CUE Bus and Metro Bus). But is it easy for us Koreans to wait for the bus? In the end, we end up grabbing the wheel again. Although not as much as in San Antonio, here too, having a car is essential for survival.
Annandale is not a new neighborhood. The houses are somewhat older, and the roads are narrow. However, this also means that the 'power of community' is strong. Fairfax County public education is among the best in the country, and the enthusiasm for learning in nearby schools, including Annandale High School, remains high.
As a father in my 40s, I feel that Annandale is a 'great place to put down roots.' People of all generations, from retired seniors to young adults just starting their careers, live together. When I take a walk in Mason District Park on the weekends, I feel a sense of relief, thinking, "Ah, I have settled well after immigrating to America."
To everyone enduring the weight of immigrant life in Annandale, Virginia, thank you for your hard work today. The 495 highway may be congested on the way home, but I hope you can wash away the fatigue of the day with a bowl of doenjang jjigae with your family when you get home.
