When talking about Rochester, it's impossible not to mention the Genesee River.
The Rochester river flows through the heart of the city and leads north to Lake Ontario.
Thus, even though Rochester is an inland city without an ocean, it enjoys a life close to water. The river deeply permeates the city's landscape, industry, and daily life. First of all, the Genesee River is not just a stream flowing through the city. This river was the 'source of energy' that created the city's history and industrial development.
In the early 19th century, Rochester thrived in the milling industry by utilizing the hydraulic power of the Genesee Falls. At that time, Rochester was called the "Flour City" because flour mills lined the riverbank. Although most of those factories have now disappeared, the old brick warehouse buildings around the river have been remodeled into cafes, restaurants, and art studios, creating a new charm. The traces of past industry have been reborn as cultural and recreational spaces.
The High Falls area, which runs through the heart of downtown Rochester, is an iconic location for the city. It's not common to have a waterfall about 30 meters high, where the river cascades over cliffs, right in the middle of the city. This area has been redeveloped under the name 'High Falls District,' featuring walkways, observation decks, restaurants, and breweries. At night, the waterfall is brightly lit, and in the summer, music performances and outdoor movie screenings are held. This is why the people of Rochester see this place not just as a tourist spot but as a 'sanctuary within the city.'

The Genesee Riverway Trail, developed along the river, is also a must-mention.
This trail stretches over 24 miles (38 km) from the southern highlands of the river to downtown and up to Lake Ontario. It's an ideal route for biking or walking, allowing you to feel close to nature while passing through the city. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the riverbank, in summer, people kayak, and in autumn, photographers flock to capture the fall foliage. In winter, the footprints of people quietly walking along the snow-covered riverbank can be seen.
The river has completely transformed the leisure culture of Rochester. What used to be an industrial area around the river has now become a walking path, picnic spot, and exercise route for citizens. It's common to see people jogging in the morning while looking at the river or having lunch on benches by the river with their packed meals. On weekends, families often come out to feed the ducks with their children. Having such natural spaces in the middle of the city is Rochester's greatest gift.
Environmentally, the Genesee River has undergone significant changes in recent years. In the past, water quality issues were severe due to industrial wastewater and pollution, but now, thanks to the efforts of local organizations and the city government, water quality has greatly improved. The wildlife around the river has increased, and fish populations are recovering. In fact, in spring and summer, it's easy to see people fishing along the riverbank. Thanks to the cleaner water, there are reports of trout and bass returning.
Moreover, the northern area where the river connects to Lake Ontario, namely Charlotte Beach, is another summer hotspot in Rochester. At the point where the river flows into the lake, there is a wide sandy beach that makes it feel like a beach town. In summer, family picnics, boating, and music festivals take place. The sunsets over Lake Ontario are truly beautiful. The scenery of the river flowing through the city into the lake makes Rochester the 'City of Water.'
The riverside in Rochester holds more meaning than just scenery. It is a space where the community reconnects. The core of the downtown revitalization project is centered around the river, and new residential complexes and commercial facilities are also concentrated around the river. The river, which was once hidden behind the walls of old factories, has now become the protagonist of the city.
