When thinking of hospitals in Los Angeles, many people immediately think of famous institutions like Cedars-Sinai or UCLA. These hospitals are known for their excellent facilities and high costs. In short, they are famous for their quality medical staff.
However, in a populous city like LA, the role of public hospitals that accept patients without insurance or those who have suffered sudden accidents is also very important.
A representative example is the Los Angeles General Medical Center, formerly known as LAC+USC Medical Center.
Although it changed its name to LA General in 2023, many long-time residents still refer to it as LAC+USC. It serves as a vital part of the healthcare safety net.
The hospital is located in Boyle Heights, east of downtown LA. The address is 2051 Marengo Street, adjacent to the USC Health Sciences Campus.
If you start from Koreatown and head east through downtown, it takes about 15-20 minutes by car when traffic is good.
This hospital has a long history. It began in 1878 when LA County established a 100-bed hospital to treat poor residents, and in 1885, it formed an educational partnership with the USC School of Medicine. The current main hospital building, which has 600 beds, opened in 2008.
LA General is particularly important for emergency and trauma patients.
This facility is a Level 1 Trauma Center, handling over 28% of trauma care in LA County.
When patients arrive with life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds, major traffic accidents, or falls from heights, multiple specialized teams, including emergency medicine, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, and radiology, respond simultaneously. One of the three burn centers in LA County is also located here.
Being a public hospital does not mean it only treats emergency patients.

It has almost all major departments, including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, and radiology.
Most importantly, it is a major teaching hospital for the USC Keck School of Medicine, training over 900 residents and fellows in nearly all specialties.
This hospital is actually one of the largest teaching hospitals in the United States.
For Korean residents in LA, language can be a significant issue.
Patients who are uncomfortable with English can request interpretation services from hospital staff, and there is no additional cost for these services.
Even if a specific language interpreter is not immediately available, assistance can be obtained through the hospital's language support system.
Having no insurance does not mean you cannot go to this hospital at all. LA County Health Services has Patient Financial Services that help with medical cost support and insurance enrollment, and assistance with Medi-Cal applications is also available.
However, having no insurance does not automatically mean free care. The support available varies based on income and eligibility, so patients need to check their situation with the hospital.
Ultimately, LA General serves a different role than flashy private hospitals.
It accepts everyone from those who have suffered major accidents to residents who find it difficult to access medical services due to financial constraints, while also training USC doctors in a large public hospital.
In a county with nearly ten million residents like LA, having such a hospital is essential for maintaining the emergency medical system.
Therefore, it is more accurate to view LA General not just as a hospital for low-income individuals, but as a safety net supporting the entire healthcare system in LA and a key hospital for severe trauma treatment.
