Former Arcadia Mayor Admits Guilt in Case Recognized by Chinese Agents - Los Angeles - 1

A major political scandal has erupted in Arcadia, a region heavily populated by Korean Americans in Southern California.

Former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, who was charged with acting on behalf of the Chinese government, admitted her guilt in federal court on May 29.

This case has garnered national attention as it connects not just to the misconduct of a local politician but also to the issue of foreign government influence within the United States.

According to federal prosecutors, former Mayor Wang, along with her then-fiancé Yao Ning "Mike" Sun, engaged in activities from 2020 to 2022 to spread pro-China content within the Chinese American community in the U.S. under directives from China.

They operated a website called 'U.S. News Center' where they posted articles and propaganda approved by the Chinese government, and some content was published only after review and approval by Chinese government officials.

U.S. law requires individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments to report this to the federal government.

However, former Mayor Wang admitted to acting in the interest of the Chinese government without going through the registration process. The charges she faces are serious felonies that could result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Interestingly, most of the activities that prosecutors are questioning occurred between 2020 and 2022, before Wang was elected as a city council member.

She was elected to the Arcadia City Council in 2022 and subsequently became mayor under the city council's rotation system. However, once the federal charges were made public, she immediately resigned from both her mayoral and council positions. This incident has sent shockwaves through the Arcadia community.

Arcadia is known for its high percentage of Chinese Americans, and some residents are concerned that this incident will lead to negative perceptions of the entire community.

On the other hand, many residents are expressing anger at the fact that an elected official acted under the influence of a foreign government. Her former fiancé Mike Sun has already admitted guilt on similar charges and is currently serving a four-year sentence in federal prison.

Prosecutors claim that the two maintained ongoing contact with Chinese government officials to discuss content distribution strategies.

The final sentencing for former Mayor Wang is scheduled for October 6.

It remains uncertain whether the actual sentence will approach the maximum of 10 years, but this case is expected to be a representative example of how seriously the U.S. government views allegations of Chinese influence in local politics.
