Billings actually has a very well-established natural environment.
The Yellowstone River flows right next to the city, and parks and green spaces are developed throughout the city, allowing residents to fully enjoy the joy of living in nature. Today, I will introduce you to the major parks and green spaces in Billings.
Riverfront Park, which can be considered the largest park in Billings, is located north of downtown Billings and stretches along the Yellowstone River. The riverside walking path is well developed, and it features picnic tables, fishing areas, and a children's playground. It is always a lively place with joggers and cyclists from spring to fall. The view of the Rimrocks (the sandstone cliffs that surround northern Billings) across the river is truly beautiful, making it a great spot for photos.
Coulson Park is located northeast of Billings along the Yellowstone River and features vast lawns, picnic areas, and direct access to the river. It is very popular as a family picnic spot in the summer, and many outdoor enthusiasts come to enjoy kayaking or canoeing on the river. The park also has baseball and softball fields, making it popular among residents who enjoy sports. In the summer evenings, families can often be seen enjoying barbecues together.

The Alkali Creek Trail, connected to ZooMontana, is a natural trail located southwest of Billings, where you can observe lush trees and wildlife up close. You can see Montana's unique wildlife, such as grizzly bears, wolves, and bobcats.
Peter Yegen Jr. Golf Course & Park is an 18-hole golf course and municipal park located south of Billings. Even if you don't play golf, the park area is open to the public, and you can freely use the large lawns and picnic spaces. There is also a viewpoint that overlooks the entire city of Billings, making it a great spot to enjoy the cityscape. In spring, wildflowers bloom throughout the park, creating a beautiful landscape.
Josephine Crossing is a natural conservation area located on the outskirts of Billings, particularly popular among those who enjoy birdwatching and nature exploration. This area is where a tributary of the Yellowstone River meets wetlands, serving as a habitat for various birds and wildlife. If you visit early in the morning, you can observe a variety of birds, including ducks, herons, and eagles. It is well-preserved in its natural state, making it a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and truly experience nature.
Overall, the park system in Billings is quite well established. There are over 60 parks managed by the city of Billings, and each residential area has small parks and playgrounds within walking distance. Overall, the maintenance of park facilities is also in good condition.
You can check the locations, facilities, and event information for each park through the Billings Parks and Recreation website.
