When considering a move to Boston, the most realistic challenge is the housing prices.
Boston is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. According to real estate data, the median price for single-family homes in Boston often exceeds $700,000, and for condos, the median price is over $600,000. In upscale areas like Back Bay and Beacon Hill, listings typically exceed $1 million. Compared to the national median, Boston's prices are significantly higher.
The suburbs are not much easier on the wallet. Newton, for example, can have median prices for single-family homes exceeding $1.5 million, making it one of the priciest suburbs in Massachusetts. Lexington and Wellesley are at similar price points. Areas like Quincy, Waltham, and Everett offer lower prices compared to downtown Boston or affluent suburbs, but they are still above the national average.
A notable feature of the Boston real estate market is the fast turnover of listings. During the spring and summer peak seasons, properties often go under contract within days of being listed, and bidding wars above the asking price are common. There is a strong demand driven by universities and hospitals, which keeps the real estate market stable. The value of real estate in Massachusetts has remained relatively stable even after the 2008 financial crisis.
Quincy, one of the areas many Korean families consider, is conveniently located at the end of the Boston Red Line subway, making transportation easy, and it has relatively lower housing prices compared to downtown Boston. Nearby cities to the north, like Everett, Revere, and Lynn, also provide options to reduce price burdens.
Before purchasing a home, I recommend checking the latest market conditions through Zillow, Redfin, and MLS data, and consulting with a Massachusetts real estate agent.
