When you first move to Boston, the phone number system can be a bit unfamiliar.
Especially since there are multiple area codes, it can be confusing at first to know which one is a Boston number. Once you understand it, it's simple, but if you don't, you'll have to look up this information every time. Let me organize this information for you in advance.
The main area codes in Boston are 617 and 857. 617 is the original area code for the inner Boston area, which includes Boston and Cambridge. It has been in use since 1947, and most of the older institutions or businesses in downtown Boston start with 617. 857 is an overlay code that was assigned as the 617 area became saturated. Both codes cover the same geographical area, so 617 doesn't mean downtown and 857 doesn't mean the outskirts. Nowadays, new numbers are often assigned to 857.
It's also useful to know the other area codes in the Greater Boston area. 781 includes suburban areas like Newton, Quincy, and Medford. 339 is the overlay code for 781. 978 and 351 cover the northern regions of Massachusetts, while 508 and 774 cover central Massachusetts and Cape Cod. You can understand that 617 and 857 are the true Boston numbers, while the others are for the Greater Boston area or other regions of Massachusetts.
One important thing to know is that in Massachusetts, dialing the area code is mandatory for all phone calls, making it a 10-digit dialing requirement. Even within the same 617 area, you must dial 617 to connect. In older American TV shows, you might see scenes where only 7 digits are dialed, but Massachusetts switched to mandatory 10-digit dialing a long time ago.
Emergency calls are made to 911, non-emergency police calls are 617-343-4911 (Boston Police non-emergency reporting), and city service-related inquiries can be made to 311. 311 is Boston's integrated service number for reporting various issues like road damage, illegal dumping, and streetlight outages. It also operates through an app, allowing you to submit reports with photos via the BOS:311 app.
