I remember when I was about 6 years old... I have a vivid memory of being held in my grandfather's arms and touching his white hair.
Looking at his hair, which appeared pure white in the sunlight, I wondered why my grandfather, who was over 70, had so much white hair.
As time has passed, every time I look in the mirror and see my own hair filled with gray, that question from back then comes back to me.
White hair gradually appears, starting with one strand, then a few strands, and at some point, the entire head seems to lose its color.
Regardless of skin color, language, or faith, this process happens to everyone.
The most impartial verdict of nature, which knows no race or borders, is the white hair that comes with aging.
We hold onto our hair color as if it defines our identity. Black hair feels like a mark of an Asian, while blonde hair seems like a symbol of the West.
However, as time goes on, all those colors converge into one gray.
It seems that nature is telling us first, at the end of life, that we are not so different from one another.
And we often say that as we age, our bodies weaken. But in reality, the soul can become deeper and stronger.
So while some may be embarrassed by their white hair, I want to say that it is a badge of honor in life.
Those with dark skin and those with light skin will eventually all have the same color hair.
If everyone in this world were born with white hair, would the world have been a bit more humble?
Perhaps we would have treated each other with the wisdom of aging from the very beginning. We might have learned solidarity over competition, and compassion over anger.
In front of the mirror, I look at my white hair. It is a sign that I am reaching the completion of life.
It is a trace of having loved the world too much, and at the same time, proof of having let go of the world.
In the end, white hair seems to say this: You are not alone. You are not the only one aging.
People of all races, all nations, and all eras have walked this path. And you are just one of them.
