Almost 40 years ago, in the late 1980s, a French song called "Nuit de folie" became hugely popular in Korea.
"Nuit de folie" translates directly to "Night of Madness" or "Crazy Night."
This song emphasizes the energy and freedom of the night, celebrating young moments of carefree enjoyment.
Released in 1988, the year of the Olympics, it can still be considered a legendary song today.
It was so famous that it would automatically play at wedding parties in France at the time.
It had the same vibe as songs like Y.M.C.A. or September, where everyone would dance together. Honestly, it might have been even more than that.
By the standards of the time, this was not just a hit; it topped the French charts and stayed there for months.
It spread throughout Europe, and in clubs or discotheques of that era, not knowing this song would make it hard to engage in conversation.
But why has this song lasted so long? The answer is simple.
It's addictive. Once you hear "dou-li-dou-li-dou," that's it.
Even if you don't know the lyrics, it's just a song full of joy. The energy and excitement conveyed through the music transcend language barriers.
It has the power to make you sing along, even if you don't speak French.
However, since this song is in French, it didn't gain traction in the American market.
The overall message of the lyrics can be summarized like this.
"When night falls, everything changes. People forget reality and surrender to the music. In this moment, they enjoy without any worries."
The fast-paced section in the middle (which sounds like rap) goes like this:
"People dive into the world of the night, feeling new freedom and getting completely swept up in the atmosphere."
Anyway, many French people from a certain generation can almost recite that rap-like section by heart.
Heard once at a wedding, again at a party, and once more at a club. It just keeps going.
With its repetitive melody and simple structure, you might think, "Isn't this too simple?" by today's standards. But that simplicity makes it stronger. If it were complex, it would have been forgotten long ago.
"Don't think, just enjoy. Enjoy this night."
This is the reason this song has survived to this day.
Additionally, many people in Korea mistakenly thought "Nuit de folie" was an English song. The melody is so synth-pop in style that it felt similar to the English dance songs that were popular at the time.
Especially the chorus "dou-li-dou-li-dou" flowed in such a way that it sounded like English.
Nowadays, many people speak English, so it seems absurd, but back then, many people couldn't speak English.
