One of the things I loved when I first moved to Arlington was the feeling that there was always something happening.
Every weekend, there's something going on somewhere in the neighborhood, and the colors change with the seasons. It wasn't until I lived here for a year that I noticed the city's annual rhythm.
One of the biggest events of the year is the Independence Day Parade on July 4th. Starting in 1965, this year (2025) marks the 60th anniversary of the event. It kicks off at 9 AM in Downtown Arlington, attracting over 40,000 attendees each year.
More than 120 participating groups join the parade, including marching bands from six Arlington ISD high schools, floats, antique cars, and dance teams. It has been recognized as the best parade in Texas by the Texas Festivals and Events Association for both 2023 and 2024. Because of its scale and tradition, many people think of Arlington first when they think of Independence Day in DFW.
In the fall, Six Flags Over Texas hosts Fright Fest. This Halloween season event adds a horror theme to the rides.
Then, from late November to December, Holiday in the Park begins. This event, which started in 1985, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year (2025).
The entire park transforms with Christmas lights, performances, and shows. The Rangers season (spring to fall) and Cowboys season (fall to winter) are also major events in Arlington. With Globe Life Field and AT&T Stadium both located downtown, the city buzzes on game days.
Looking at this calendar, it's clear that Arlington thrives purely on entertainment and events. From the Independence Day Parade to Six Flags, the Rangers, the Cowboys, and the holiday season, there's always something happening. Knowing this rhythm makes living in Arlington much more enjoyable.
If you've never seen the Independence Day Parade, I recommend getting out early this July 4th. Since the parade starts at 9 AM, it's best to grab a spot by 8:30 AM. This event, with its 60-year tradition, is definitely worth seeing at least once.
