If you've decided to move to Torrance, it's easy to get caught up in the vague idea of "I need to look into this and that" and end up missing important details.
Having lived in Torrance for a long time and helped many people move in, I've noticed common items that are often overlooked. I've organized a checklist by category for before and after your move.
Here are the housing-related items to check. First, verify the school district boundaries before signing a lease. Different schools are assigned based on the address within Torrance. You can check the assigned school by entering your address in the School Finder feature on the TUSD website. Second, request the previous utility bills from the landlord. Knowing the average costs for electricity, gas, and water will help you budget your living expenses accurately. Third, check the parking situation. Confirm whether there are designated parking spaces that match the number of family vehicles and how visitor parking works before signing the lease. Fourth, verify the availability of internet services. Check which service, either Spectrum or AT&T Fiber, is available at your address.
Next are the administrative tasks. First, you must report your address change to the California DMV within 10 days after moving. You can change your driver's license address online or in person at the DMV. Second, update your vehicle registration to your new address. Third, you can apply for a change of address for your mail online at the USPS (usps.com) website. Fourth, notify your bank, credit card companies, and insurance providers of your address change to prevent automatic payments or bills from going to the wrong address. Fifth, if you have children, make sure to register them at a TUSD school as soon as possible. You can register through the Enrollment Center, and you'll need documents such as proof of residency (lease agreement or utility bill), immunization records, and previous school transcripts.
Understanding the local infrastructure is also important. First, locate the nearest Korean grocery stores (like H Mart, Galleria, or Han Nam Chain). Second, choose a primary care physician or family doctor. You need to select a doctor within your health insurance network to receive benefits. Third, familiarize yourself with the nearest emergency room locations. Torrance Memorial Medical Center (3330 Lomita Blvd) and Providence Little Company of Mary (4101 Torrance Blvd) are notable options. Fourth, check the trash collection days. Single-family homes have designated collection days each week, and you need to separate recyclables, food waste, and regular trash. Fifth, get a Torrance Public Library (www.torranceca.gov/library) card. In addition to free book rentals, you can access various services like e-books, online courses, and children's programs.
Lastly, consider community connections. Identifying Korean churches or community groups of interest in advance can help you overcome loneliness after the move. Installing the Nextdoor app can be useful for communicating with neighbors and obtaining local information. It's normal to feel uncertain in the early days of your move. Asking fellow Korean residents who have moved in before you is often quicker and more accurate than any search.
