The area around Torrance is considered one of the best places to play golf in Southern California. Thanks to the mild weather year-round, you can enjoy golfing in all four seasons, and there is a good distribution of public and semi-private courses within a 30-minute radius. Whether you're a low-handicapper or someone who plays for fun, you can find a course that suits your needs.
One of the closest public courses to Torrance is Jack Kramer Club. Located in El Segundo, it's about a 10-minute drive north from Torrance. This 18-hole public course is relatively easy to book on weekends and has reasonable fees.
Alondra Golf Course in Lawndale is also nearby. It borders the northern edge of Torrance and features both an 18-hole and a 9-hole par 3 course. If you book early on weekend mornings, the green fees are lower. It's a popular spot for beginners and practice rounds.
A little further out is Palos Verdes Golf Club in Rolling Hills Estates. This semi-private course is set against the stunning backdrop of the PV Peninsula, and non-members can play during certain times. The course is challenging, and the views of the Pacific Ocean from the fairways are exceptional.
Nearby, you'll find Los Verdes Golf Course, a public course located on the PV cliffs, offering a scenic ocean view while you play. Its green fees are lower than those of other upscale courses, making it quite popular, and reservations fill up quickly. It's advisable to book online 2-3 weeks in advance.
In the Rancho Palos Verdes area, Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles is a luxurious private course situated on coastal cliffs with breathtaking scenery. Access for non-members is limited, but some rounds can be played through special guest invitations.
If you venture a bit further, you can find Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades and Rancho Park Golf Course in West LA, both about 40-50 minutes from Torrance. Riviera is a prestigious course that hosts the PGA Tour, and while non-member play is virtually impossible, you can watch the tournament during the annual Genesis Invitational.
There are also plenty of golf practice facilities. TopGolf in El Segundo is great for families or groups, and there are several driving ranges in nearby cities like Hawthorne and Gardena.
Golfing in Southern California is generally more flexible than in Korea regarding green fee reservations and playing culture. It's common to be matched with other groups when signing up for single rounds, and if you go early in the morning, you might qualify for twilight discounts. If you live in Torrance, I recommend experiencing the ocean view rounds at Los Verdes at least once.
