While enjoying a cup of coffee at a downtown café today, a particularly delightful expression in Korean came to mind.
It is the phrase "energy is spreading." When was the last time you felt this way? As I approach my forties, I can only think back to ten years ago.
The phrase 'energy is spreading' is a stronger expression than 'to be energetic.' It signifies a strong surge of energy.
We use this phrase when things are going smoothly, our shoulders naturally straighten, and our steps feel lighter.
Conversely, when anger builds up, we say "angry energy is spreading."
Positively, it represents vitality, and negatively, it signifies a furious momentum. In short, it is the moment when the energy within me bursts out.
Living in a quiet city, I feel these shifts in energy more distinctly. Usually calm, but when things go well, the world suddenly seems brighter.
In my twenties, I felt energy all night long, and in my thirties, just talking about promotions or money would make my energy surge. But now, the state of my mind has become more important than mere physical strength.
Having spent over ten years in the workforce and living in a city like Iowa City, which is neither too big nor too small, it's easy to fall into a rut. However, there are moments of thrill when a project goes well or when something I've prepared for a long time finally bears fruit.
But there is also negative energy. Sudden lane changes while driving, a rude comment from someone—these things can really amplify angry energy. Now that I'm over forty, I realize how much this can consume me. The more anger spreads outward, the more exhausted I feel inside.
These days, I try to keep that in check. I believe that true strength lies in the ability to manage one's inner energy.
Now that 2026 has begun, the New Year in Iowa City is quiet, but it also provides ample time for reflection.
I hope this year is one where the energy of 'vitality' and 'positive influence' spreads.
It would be wonderful if my small abilities could help someone, and if my good energy could be passed on to my family and colleagues.
Isn't that the most beautiful moment when energy spreads?
No matter the economy or the environment, if the mindset of "I can do it" stands tall, we can overcome most storms.
Ultimately, energy comes from the heart. How about adding a little more positivity as fuel to your inner engine today?
From Iowa City, I send you all abundant energy as you read this.
In 2026, let's all charge forward with the good energy of the universe!
