Have you been forgetful lately?
Walking around the room with a coffee cup in the morning, thinking, "What was I looking for?"
But I suddenly became curious. How much does this decrease in concentration affect different professions?
Especially in jobs where a single mistake can cost lives, money, or the fate of a company?
So I took a look at three professions.
Airplane pilots, lawyers, programmers
Who should be the most careful?
Pilot – "In the sky, a mistake is a disaster"
Being a pilot is not just a job. Mistakes make the news.
That's why the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in the U.S. has set a retirement age. No one can fly over 65 years old.
As you age, reaction speed, vision, and memory – these quietly but surely decline. Taking that into account, regular health checks are required. (Cognitive ability tests are actually included.)
Studies have shown that older pilots made more mistakes due to slight differences in judgment during emergencies in flight simulator experiments.
Conclusion: The profession most sensitive to decreased concentration.
For lawyers, accuracy is more important than speed, and logic and persuasion are more important than intuition.
Is that why? Most partner lawyers in large U.S. law firms are over 50.
The depth of experience that comes from years of practice is a strong advantage.
In fact, there are quite a few lawyers who continue to work even after 70.
From a client's perspective, there's a weight to the thought, "This person seems like they could end it all with just one word."
Of course, managing physical stamina and stress is necessary, but,
if we only look at concentration, it can be considered a relatively free profession.
Conclusion: A representative profession where age acts more as an advantage than a disadvantage.
Programmer – "When new technologies flood in, the mind stops"
Developers must always learn to survive.
However, after turning 50... learning new things is not as easy as it used to be.
In the U.S., developers over 45 often face age discrimination when changing jobs.
Why? Not because they are 'slow', but because of concerns that they might not keep up with new technologies.
Of course, not everyone is like that.
These days, there are many collaboration tools and assistants like ChatGPT that help maintain work efficiency.
But most acknowledge that their concentration is not what it used to be.
Conclusion: A profession where decreased concentration subtly holds you back, but teamwork and tools can cover for it.
