Living in Fort Worth as an Immigrant: It's Not All Advantages - Fort Worth - 1

When you settle in the U.S. as an immigrant, you quickly learn that no city is perfect.

Fort Worth is no exception. There are definitely good points, but there are also things that require adjustment. Having lived here for a while, I feel I can now honestly talk about both sides.

One of the biggest advantages is definitely the taxes. Texas has no state income tax. The absence of a state income tax line on your paycheck is a pleasant surprise, especially at first. Housing prices are about 13% lower than the national average, and overall living costs are relatively manageable. There are also job opportunities. Fort Worth has a low unemployment rate of 3.9%, and there is a stable job market based on aviation, manufacturing, and energy sectors. The DFW Korean community is stronger than expected, with Korean churches, Korean schools, and community gatherings.

However, to be honest, you can't live without a car. There is public transportation, including the Trinity Railway Express that connects to downtown Dallas, and there are city bus routes, but they are not practical for everyday use. Without at least one car, you can't even get to the grocery store. This becomes a barrier, especially for immigrants in the beginning. Adapting to cowboy culture can also feel strange at first. While the Stockyards area and rodeo culture are fascinating, you can't help but wonder if you belong to this cultural sphere. Additionally, the crime rate is higher than the national average, so you need to be careful when choosing where to live.

Ultimately, Fort Worth is a city of opportunities. Low taxes, relatively low living costs, and a growing job market are real advantages. The only conditions are that you need to get a car, embrace a new culture, and choose your residence wisely. There are always conditions to immigrant life. I feel like putting down roots in this city was the right choice for me. But it's a question each person has to find their own answer to.
