Living in Brooklyn for a long time, you naturally start to notice the unique characteristics of each neighborhood.
I've seen how much school districts influence moving decisions, especially for families with children. One of my neighbors even moved a few blocks away due to their child's elementary school enrollment. New York City public schools have school districts and zoning that are so detailed that the assigned school can vary significantly depending on where you live within Brooklyn.
A well-known neighborhood for good school districts in Brooklyn is Park Slope. It belongs to District 15, and schools like PS 321, PS 107, and PS 10 receive high ratings. Particularly, PS 321 consistently ranks among the top public elementary schools in New York City. Parental involvement is high, and the school offers a variety of programs. Park Slope is also recognized for its well-equipped amenities and safety, making it a popular choice for families. Consequently, housing costs are relatively high within Brooklyn.
Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and Boerum Hill are also part of District 15 and receive good evaluations for their school districts. These three neighborhoods are often grouped together as BoCoCa (Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens) due to their similar atmosphere. They are quiet, safe, and have a charming residential feel. PS 58 is a well-known elementary school in this area. Middle and high schools are supported citywide, so the impact of the residential area is relatively less, but students from this region are reputed to be academically competitive.
Brooklyn Heights is one of the most historic and expensive neighborhoods in Brooklyn. It belongs to District 13, and PS 8 is highly regarded among parents. Its accessibility to downtown Manhattan makes it a preferred choice for families working in Manhattan. Being adjacent to DUMBO, it is home to many families in the startup and tech industries. Williamsburg is famous for its arts and hip-hop culture, but in the last decade, the number of family residents has increased, improving the school environment. It belongs to District 14 and includes schools like PS 147 and PS 84.
On the other hand, areas in eastern or southern Brooklyn (East New York, Brownsville, parts of Canarsie) have relatively lower school ratings and safety concerns. However, in recent years, gentrification has rapidly changed some neighborhoods. Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy have become safer than before, with an increase in cafes, restaurants, and other amenities. You can check school assignment and ratings by address on GreatSchools (greatschools.org) or the New York City Department of Education site (schools.nyc.gov). It's advisable to confirm which school is assigned to your address before moving. I believe this is truly important based on what I've learned while living in Brooklyn.
