When it comes to exercising, honestly, there are few places as convenient as the San Fernando Valley for getting active.
The weather is just great. Even in winter, it's only a bit chilly by Korean standards, and it doesn't rain that often, so there's really no reason to be stuck inside a gym. Just going outside for a walk counts as exercise in this neighborhood.
If you love hiking, you have even more options. If you check AllTrails, you'll find endless trails in the area. There are easy routes that are mostly flat, as well as more challenging ones that will get your heart rate up. Just around O'Melveny Park, there are several trails, so you can choose from a short 1.6-mile course to ones over 5 miles, depending on your situation. If you go a little further to Granada Hills or Chatsworth, the trails continue, so honestly, you won't get bored with your exercise routes.
For walking or jogging, Lake Balboa Park is really convenient. The path around the lake is well-maintained, with a flat surface, and you'll see many people pushing strollers and riding bikes. If you go early in the morning, the air is nice, and everyone is out exercising, which makes you feel motivated too. The evening is also fine, but it can get a bit crowded on nice days. Still, it's so spacious that it doesn't feel cramped.
If you want to try something a bit different, there's Stoney Point Park. This isn't just a walking park; it has a lot of rocks, making it popular for rock climbing. There are sections suitable for beginners, and you'll see experienced climbers too, which is fun to watch. However, if you're a beginner, it's best not to go alone; it's better to go with someone experienced. Safety is the priority.
There's nothing too inconvenient in the neighborhood either. Parks like Las Palmas Park and Memorial Park are perfect for a quick stroll in flip-flops. They're also convenient for bringing kids along. On days when you think, "I can't do anything too intense today," just lightly stretching in places like these is enough.
But if you feel you need to do some weight training, there are gyms available. There's a YMCA, and chains like Planet Fitness and LA Fitness are located in Northridge and Sylmar, so it's not hard to find options.
The conclusion is simple. This neighborhood offers an environment where "if you want to exercise, you can do it right away." The weather is nice, the space is ample, and there are many choices. So, the funny thing is, living here and not exercising is really just an excuse. Your body needs to move to feel less pain and age slower. Don't look too far; just start with a walk around your home, and that will last the longest.
