When thinking of universities in LA, UCLA and USC come to mind first, but there is another private university that deserves attention, even if it's not as well-known.
That university is Loyola Marymount University, abbreviated as LMU.
As the name suggests, it is a Catholic private university with a Jesuit tradition, located on a bluff near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
The school boasts a fantastic view overlooking the Pacific Ocean, making it a place you would want to visit just for the campus view.
LMU has a long history dating back to 1911, formed from the merger of Loyola University, Marymount College, and Saint Vincent's College.
Currently, the undergraduate student population is around 6,500, which is smaller compared to UCLA or USC.
However, this smaller size leads to close relationships between students and professors, providing a personalized educational experience.
The average class size is also small, with more discussion-based classes than large lectures.
LMU particularly excels in its Film and Television department. The combination of Jesuit liberal arts education and media training makes LMU's Film and TV program one of the top in the country, alongside USC and NYU.
Taking advantage of its proximity to Hollywood, many students gain internships and hands-on experience while studying. The employment rate in the entertainment industry after graduation is also quite high.
The business major is strong as well, with the LMU College of Business (Hilton Center for Business) actively connecting with local businesses.
The law school (Loyola Law School) is located on a separate campus and is particularly renowned in the field of public interest law.
Various majors are offered, including education, engineering, and art, and service learning is integrated into all curricula in line with Jesuit traditions.
Tuition is over $50,000 per year, but various scholarships and financial aid are available.
Even non-Catholics can apply, and students from all backgrounds are welcomed regardless of religion.
In fact, the percentage of Catholic students is less than half of the total.
The percentage of Asian students is also quite high, with a significant number of Korean students enrolled.
If you are looking for a meaningful four-year private university experience in the LA area, LMU is a very attractive option.
The campus atmosphere is warm and community-centered. The Jesuit values of service and justice permeate the school culture. Spending four years on a campus with a Pacific view can be a time for not only academic growth but also for refining one's values in life.
Campus tours and admissions information sessions can be reserved on the school's website. I encourage you to visit the campus in person to feel the atmosphere for yourself.
