Detroit Annual Event Calendar: This Will Make Planning Easier - Detroit - 1

Detroit is a city rich in cultural events more than you might expect.

During Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend, large festivals take place around Hart Plaza, and experiencing them will make you think, 'Wow, Detroit is this kind of city.'

The most iconic event is the Movement Electronic Music Festival. This world-class electronic/techno music festival is held for three days at Hart Plaza every year during Memorial Day weekend (late May).

Did you know that Detroit is the birthplace of techno music? Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, known as the 'Belleville Three,' created techno in Detroit in the 1980s, and Movement is an event that honors that legacy. It attracts over 100,000 attendees, with both free and paid areas.

During the Labor Day weekend in September, the Detroit Jazz Festival also takes place at Hart Plaza. This is the largest free jazz festival in the world, featuring over 40 performances over four days. There's no admission fee, so you can attend without any worries.

In January, the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) is held at Huntington Place (formerly Cobo Center), showcasing new cars from major manufacturers. This is particularly interesting for those in the automotive industry.

In June, a fireworks event on the Detroit River takes place, which is the largest in the Midwest, and in October, the Detroit-Windsor International Marathon occurs. This is a unique experience as it is the only marathon in the U.S. that crosses the border into Canada. Within the Korean community, there are often events organized in connection with the Korean Cultural Center or celebrations for Chuseok and Seollal centered around Korean churches.
