In Thousand Oaks, known as the "Valley" area among Koreans, the school that Korean parents first seek out is Westlake High School.
As a father raising kids in this area, I have consistently heard about the school atmosphere and real stories, so I investigated why this school is preferred among Korean parents.
Westlake High School is a public high school located on the border of Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village in Ventura County, part of the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
It serves grades 9 through 12, with students primarily coming from Colina Middle School and Los Cerritos Middle School. The school district is stable, and the living environment is good, so the overall atmosphere of the school is calm and academically focused.
The biggest advantage of this school is its academic level. A variety of AP courses are offered, providing students with many options to challenge themselves in their areas of interest. The college admission rate is also relatively high, making it a trusted school among Korean parents who want to send their children to four-year universities, especially UC schools or competitive colleges.

Many students are particularly preparing for STEM fields. The levels of math and science courses are high, and related clubs and activities are active.
For students aiming for engineering, medical school, or computer-related majors, it can be seen as a good environment. However, it is also true that there is a certain level of competition. Depending on the child's personality, this aspect can be either an advantage or a burden.
Another feature of Westlake High is its balanced educational environment. It is not just a school focused on academics; sports and arts activities are also very active. The sports teams perform well, and programs in performing arts such as band, orchestra, and theater are well-managed. Parents are generally satisfied with the environment, as it allows children to grow through diverse experiences without leaning too much in one direction.
The percentage of Korean students has been steadily increasing. As a result, information sharing among parents occurs naturally, and communities related to tutoring and college preparation have formed. For children, the fact that it is not a completely unfamiliar environment is one of the reasons Korean families in this area feel reassured.
What I have felt in this area is that Westlake High is not just a school with good grades, but a school with a stable atmosphere and many students who have clear goals. The surrounding environment is quiet and safe, making it easy for children to find their direction without unnecessary stress.
If parents are considering moving to the Valley area, Westlake High is definitely a choice worth considering. However, just because the school is good does not mean it is suitable for every child, so it is important to also consider the child's personality and adaptability to the competitive environment.
Still, one thing is certain. There seems to be a clear reason why Westlake High continues to receive good evaluations among parents raising children in this area.
