Whenever I talk to people who are considering where to live after retirement, Fort Worth comes up quite often.
It usually starts with, 'Isn't Texas too hot?' But when you look into it, the advantages are more significant than you might think.
First and foremost is the financial aspect. Texas has no state income tax. Not having to pay state income tax on Social Security or pension income after retirement makes a big difference. The cost of living in Fort Worth is lower than in Dallas and slightly below the national average. The cost for senior assisted living is around $2,859 per month, which is lower than the Texas median of $3,312, and independent living starts at $4,173. Of course, it can go up to $6,500 depending on the facility and level of service, but when comparing the same quality, it remains competitive against other major metropolitan areas.
The healthcare infrastructure is also strong. Major hospitals like Texas Health Harris Methodist, Baylor Scott & White All Saints, and Cook Children's are all located within the city. As you age, access to hospitals becomes increasingly important, and Fort Worth alleviates concerns in that area. Being included among the top 10 Age-Friendly Network cities designated by AARP indicates a senior-friendly environment. This means the city is actively providing infrastructure and programs for older adults.
The weather is honestly hot in the summer. However, winters are mild, and there is almost no snow, making travel easy. For those who enjoy outdoor activities in warm weather, Texas's long spring and fall can feel like a gift. With places like the Botanic Garden, Trinity Trails, and cultural district museums, there are many spaces to enjoy alone or with friends. The relaxed pace of life that comes with cowboy culture may become even more valuable as you age.
I believe retirement is not the end but the beginning of the next chapter. Where you open that chapter can significantly change your quality of life. Fort Worth is a city worth seriously considering for that choice.
