There was a family preparing to move to Seattle. They were torn between two neighborhoods and ultimately decided on the one with the higher test scores. Later, they mentioned that they were never completely sure if that choice was truly the right one for their child. There were aspects that scores alone could not address.
The first question that comes to mind is this: Does a higher score mean a better school? To find the answer, we need to look at how those scores are calculated. GreatSchools uses a 1 to 10 scoring system, which for elementary schools reflects test scores and academic growth equally. Test scores represent the current level of achievement, while growth shows how much students have improved over the year. The two tell different stories.
Even within Seattle, there is quite a bit of variation between schools. Queen Anne Elementary School, Greenwood Elementary School, and Cascadia Elementary all have scores of 10. Montlake Elementary School has a score of 9. In contrast, West Seattle Elementary School has a score of 4. Even within the same city, scores can vary significantly by neighborhood. This variation arises because the number of enrolled students and program offerings differ from school to school.
Attendance rates are also worth examining. Queen Anne Elementary School has a regular attendance rate of 86 percent, while Greenwood Elementary School has a rate of 91 percent. These numbers provide insights into the school environment that scores alone cannot reveal.
It's also important to touch on the equity rating. This metric shows whether students from various backgrounds are achieving good results equally. A school may have a high overall score but a low equity rating. If this is the school your child will actually attend, it would be wise to consider this aspect as well.
Looking at how ratings have changed over the past few years can also be beneficial. Whether the trend is upward or downward can change the meaning of the current score. Observing trends over a year is often more reflective of the actual school situation than a single year's number.
Seattle also has significant differences in housing prices by neighborhood. Schools with higher scores often have higher property prices nearby. If you're weighing your budget against school districts, it might be worth considering neighborhoods with slightly lower scores but good growth trends. Adjusting your conditions gradually rather than stretching your budget too thin can be more comfortable.
For families moving to Seattle from other states, there are additional factors to consider beyond school districts. Washington has no state income tax, but property taxes are relatively high. Since the tax structure differs from the state you previously lived in, it's advisable to factor this into your budget. Those newly immigrating from Korea should also check this aspect when choosing their initial settlement location.
And there's one more thing to confirm: whether the house you're interested in is actually assigned to that school. Seattle Public Schools has tightly defined assignment zones by neighborhood, so the closest school on the map may not be the one your child is assigned to. Checking the district's website with your address before signing a contract can reduce future worries. Especially for families with children already, I recommend taking ample time to consider the timing of a potential transfer.
Rather than placing too much weight on a single score, looking at growth, attendance rates, and rating trends together can help you make a choice that better suits your child. This article is not investment or legal advice, and it's advisable to consult with a professional before finalizing any contracts.
