If you've decided to move to Columbia, there are more things to prepare than you might think.
Having lived in this area, I've noticed the common challenges that newcomers often face.
I've put together a practical checklist that can significantly speed up your settling-in process if you know it in advance.
The first thing to do is to obtain a Maryland driver's license and register your vehicle. Columbia is a city where living without a car can be quite inconvenient, so you need to switch to a Maryland license within 60 days of your move.
Make an appointment to visit the MVA (Motor Vehicle Administration) in advance and prepare the necessary documents (previous state license, social security number, proof of residency, etc.). You also need to register your vehicle in Maryland within 60 days of moving, which requires title transfer and tax payment.
It's also advisable to quickly handle your residency information registration. This includes voter registration, school registration (if you have children), setting up primary care physicians (doctor, dentist, pediatrician), and enrolling in or changing insurance.
For school registration, proceed through the official HCPSS (Howard County Public School System) website after verifying your residency, and check in advance as the required documents vary by grade. Maryland requires certain vaccination records, so it's a good idea to prepare your children's vaccination records in English.
Connecting to essential services at the beginning can also be convenient. You will need to start BGE (electricity and gas) service, set up internet and cable (Comcast Xfinity, Verizon Fios, etc.), and register for Columbia Association (CA) membership.
As a CA member, you can access the pool, tennis courts, golf course, and fitness facilities at discounted rates, enhancing your quality of life in the area. Don't forget to open a bank account, change your address (USPS forwarding), and update your credit card and various subscription service addresses.
Quickly integrating into the local network is also key to settling in. By joining the Nextdoor app, you can receive real-time neighborhood information and communication from neighbors, and registering for Howard County's official social media and Alert Howard notification service will keep you updated on local events and emergencies.
Building a network with those who have extensive local settling experience through Korean community meetings or Korean churches can also be very helpful.
Even if the first month of moving is hectic, going through this process will help you adapt to life in Columbia quite quickly.
