When I first came to Irving, I really had no idea this city had so many parks.
Honestly, when I think of Irving, I first picture its proximity to DFW Airport, the many companies in Las Colinas, and the image of a business city with highways buzzing by. But after living here and exploring, I found so many places that made me think, "Wow, there's a park here too?"
Irving has over 90 parks, both large and small, and the city manages more than 2,000 acres of parkland and green space. This is definitely more than just a neighborhood with a few playgrounds.
The first place worth visiting is Campion Trails. It's a signature greenbelt trail in Irving that runs along the Elm Fork and West Fork of the Trinity River. You can walk or bike along the long, connected paths, and most of it is paved, making it easy to exercise.
I enjoy dirt paths, but I dislike how my sneakers get ruined after it rains. Here, that concern is minimal. You'll see many people biking, families with strollers, and folks walking their dogs. Even on days when I think, "I don't feel like exercising today," just getting out and walking for 30 minutes can really change my mood.
If you're near Las Colinas, Thomas Jefferson Park is also nice. It's about 27 acres with a trail that allows you to stroll slowly around a pond. It's not a flashy tourist spot, but that's what makes it appealing. Walking around the water and sitting on a bench for a bit helps clear my mind. The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial is also here, making it worth a visit while you're walking around.
If you want a more active workout, Victoria Park is another option. It's about 22 acres with a pond and walking paths, and you can engage in activities like disc golf and volleyball. In the evening, there are lit areas, making it a great place to exercise while avoiding the heat of a Texas afternoon.
For dog owners, Irving Dog Park is a convenient spot. It has separate areas for large and small dogs, so you won't have to worry about your little pup being overwhelmed by bigger dogs. Everyone knows how important shade and water are in Texas summers, and that goes for dogs too.
Centennial Park has a different vibe. Created to commemorate Irving's 100th anniversary, it's not just a park for exercise; it also showcases the city's history. Walking around Delaware Creek, you can enjoy the fun of exploring spaces that document Irving's past.
Living here, I've realized that having many parks might seem trivial, but it actually makes a significant difference in daily life. You don't have to travel far to find a place to walk after dinner, bike on a weekend morning, or sit by the water when you need a break.
What I thought was just a city with lots of airports and companies turned out to be a place with plenty of spots to enjoy the outdoors in just a pair of sneakers.
