When living in Tampa, it's essential to know about hospitals.
While a local clinic may suffice for routine care, emergencies requiring major surgery or complex treatments like heart, brain, or organ transplants will lead you to seek out a large hospital.
A prominent hospital serving this role in Tampa is Tampa General Hospital, abbreviated as TGH.
The main TGH facility is located just south of downtown Tampa on Davis Islands. Its address is 1 Tampa General Circle, and it's a massive hospital situated by the water, making a significant first impression. Currently, the main campus is a large academic medical center with 982 beds.
It has a long history, starting as Tampa Municipal Hospital, which opened in 1927 with 186 beds. It was renamed Tampa General Hospital in 1956, marking nearly a century of service.
One of TGH's most notable features is that it is not just a general hospital but an academic medical center. It serves as the primary teaching hospital for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, where faculty and specialists treat patients while also educating medical students and residents. Currently, about 700 residents and fellows are training in various specialties at TGH.
For emergency patients, being a Level I Trauma Center is also crucial. TGH is a key hospital for treating severe trauma patients in the Tampa Bay area, certified for both adult and pediatric Level I Trauma care.
Patients with severe injuries from major accidents or falls are transported here, and a medical helicopter service brings critically ill patients from surrounding areas.

The organ transplant field is another reason TGH is well-known. It performs various organ transplants, including kidneys, livers, hearts, lungs, and pancreases, and has conducted over 14,000 transplants to date. Notably, in 1985, it performed Florida's first successful heart transplant.
It also has departments for cardiovascular, neurosurgery, stroke, cancer, orthopedics, gastroenterology, urology, and endocrinology.
As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, it treats severe stroke patients. Burn treatment is another strength, with a specialized burn center for both adults and children.
Families with children should also be aware of Muma Children's Hospital at TGH. It offers specialized care from pediatric intensive care to neonatal care, pediatric surgery, and pediatric kidney disease. The hospital sees a significant number of births, with approximately 7,600 deliveries in the 2025 fiscal year.
Looking at the hospital's scale in numbers makes it more tangible. During the same period, there were about 83,000 discharges of inpatients, approximately 980,000 outpatient visits, and around 49,000 surgeries. Adult emergency and trauma center visits alone reached about 193,000.
In the 2026-27 evaluation, TGH was ranked the number one hospital in the Tampa Bay area for the 11th consecutive year. Therefore, while it may not be necessary to visit TGH for minor illnesses like a cold, the situation changes when it comes to major surgeries, severe illnesses, organ transplants, heart or brain conditions, or serious accidents.
If I were to move to Tampa, I would make sure to know the location of TGH along with a nearby emergency room. Ideally, you wouldn't need to go there often, but having such an academic medical center nearby is an important part of living in Tampa.
