Fort Worth is a city located in the northern part of Texas, serving as the western anchor of the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) metropolitan area.
It's only about a 30-minute drive from Dallas, so many people visit both cities together, but the atmosphere is completely different. While Dallas is a modern business city with a skyline, Fort Worth is a place where cowboy culture and a Western lifestyle thrive, as its nickname "Cowtown" suggests. With a population of around 950,000, it is the fifth-largest city in Texas.
The first place to visit in Fort Worth is undoubtedly the Stockyards National Historic District. This was the site of the largest livestock exchange in the U.S. from the late 19th to early 20th century, and you can still see "The Herd" parade, where real longhorn cattle are driven down Exchange Avenue, twice a day. It takes place at 11:30 AM and 4 PM, and it's free to watch. The world's largest country music honky-tonk bar, Billy Bob's Texas, is also located in this area. With the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, boot artisan shops, barbecue restaurants, and rodeo facilities all in one area, you can easily spend half a day here. Walking tours are also available multiple times a day for $15 per adult.
Just a 10-minute drive from the Stockyards, the Cultural District offers a completely different vibe. Three art museums designed by world-renowned architects are within walking distance: the Kimbell Art Museum designed by Louis Kahn, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth designed by Tadao Ando, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art designed by Philip Johnson. All three museums offer free admission to their permanent exhibitions. The Kimbell features a ceiling design that utilizes natural light, making the architecture itself a work of art. The Modern impresses with its reflecting pool and concrete structure, while the Amon Carter is a treasure trove of Western American paintings. The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is also located in this area.
Downtown and Sundance Square represent the modern face of Fort Worth. Sundance Square Plaza is pedestrian-friendly, filled with restaurants, bars, and theaters, and in the evenings, outdoor performances take place. The Bass Performance Hall is considered one of the most beautiful concert halls in the U.S., notable for its facade adorned with a large angel sculpture. It takes about 30-35 minutes to get from DFW Airport to Fort Worth via the Trinity Railway Express (TRE), and about 30 minutes from Dallas Love Field via I-30. If you're visiting Texas for the first time, don't just see Dallas; make sure to stop by Fort Worth as well.
