In 1990, there was a song called 'When the Cold Wind Blows' sung by a Korean artist named Kim Ji-yeon.
"When the cold wind blows, do you know I've left?"
It was quite popular at the time, and even now, many years later, I find myself thinking of it whenever the cold wind blows in the fall.
However, in San Antonio, Texas, this song has a slightly different meaning.
When the cold wind blows, it doesn't mean someone has left; it means summer has left.
When the cold wind blows, do you know I've left?
Behind the passing wind, only longing remains.
When the leaves fall, do you know I've left?
Only memories will remain on the falling leaves.
Once, your warm gaze
shook my young heart,
but has it turned so cold
because of the changing seasons?
When the cold wind blows, I will miss you,
but please don't think of me again.
Once, your warm gaze
shook my young heart~
but has it turned so cold
because of the changing seasons?
When the cold wind blows, you will feel lonely,
but please don't think of me again.
But please don't think of me again.
Living in San Antonio, when mid-October arrives, the weather changes to fall, but it doesn't gradually cool down in the mornings and evenings like in Korea.
Just yesterday, the daytime temperature soared above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, or 27 degrees Celsius.
With the high humidity, it's hard to believe it's already mid-October.
Even wearing short sleeves feels hot, and I still have to keep the car air conditioning on.
But at night, the situation changes. The cold wind starts to come down from the north.
At first, it seems like just a little breeze, but as the night deepens, the sound of the wind becomes more intense.
I can hear a rumbling sound outside, and the trees are shaking violently.
Then, when I wake up in the morning and open the front door, I'm taken aback.
The hot, humid air from yesterday has vanished, replaced by a cold, dry wind that hits my face.
In just one night, the season has changed.
This is what is commonly experienced in Texas, known as a cold front.

San Antonio is greatly influenced by warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico.
However, in the fall, cold air from Canada and the central United States pushes down into Texas.
Especially in Texas, there are no large east-west mountain ranges to block the cold air coming from the north.
So when a strong cold front comes down, the temperature can drop significantly in a short time.
Interestingly, the direction of the wind changes. Usually, warm, humid winds blow from the south or southeast, but when a cold front passes, it suddenly shifts to a north wind. The humidity drops, and the air itself changes.
There's also a term that Texans commonly use: 'Blue Norther.' This refers to the phenomenon when a strong cold wind suddenly comes from the north, causing a sharp drop in temperature.
Of course, fall in San Antonio doesn't mean it will keep getting colder. Just a few days after the cold wind passes, temperatures can rise back up to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
It's a cycle of pulling out warm clothes and then going back to short sleeves. That's why it's hard to completely organize the closet in October here.
However, I don't dislike this kind of weather.
When the north wind blows all night and I breathe in the cold air in the morning, I feel that the long Texas summer is finally coming to an end.
