My favorite thing is walking new paths while listening to music. Columbia, MD, is a city where you can fully enjoy that pleasure. A network of 93 miles of walking and biking pathways connects the entire city like a thread.
The Pathway system in Columbia is a true highlight of the city. There are 93 miles (about 150 kilometers) of paved walking and biking paths completely separated from the road, connecting nine villages. Jogging or biking along these pathways on the weekend allows you to explore all of Columbia without a car.
It's great for walking with dogs and suitable for pushing strollers, with wide and well-maintained paths. The pathways pass through forests and along lakes, offering different scenery with each season on the same route.
The waterfront trail around Lake Kittamaqundi is the most accessible exercise route from the town center. The loop around the lake is about 1 mile, making it easy to manage, and there are benches and picnic areas, perfect for resting after a workout.
Centennial Park, located north of Columbia, is a Howard County park where you can enjoy a 3-4 mile course along the trail around Centennial Lake. Fishing, kayaking, and picnicking are also possible, and there are tennis courts and a baseball field.
The fitness center and outdoor pool operated by the Columbia Association (CA) are available for CA members (most residents of Columbia). The pool is one of the most popular exercise facilities among residents during the summer.
If you head out to nearby Patapsco Valley State Park, you can enjoy more challenging hiking trails. Columbia is a city where you can naturally incorporate exercise into your daily life.
