In California, the REAL ID is a driver's license or identification card that meets federal identification standards and will be required for boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities starting May 7, 2025.
You cannot obtain a REAL ID solely by applying online you must visit the DMV to complete the identity verification process.
If you upgrade to a REAL ID in line with your driver's license renewal cycle, it will simplify identification for international flights, domestic flights, and federal facilities with just one ID.

Important Notes
-
You cannot obtain a REAL ID solely by applying online. You must visit the DMV to complete the identity verification process.
-
If you do not have a REAL ID, you will need another form of identification (e.g., valid U.S. passport) to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities.
-
DMV appointments can be busy, so it is advisable to schedule your appointment as early as possible.
You can board domestic flights with a valid Korean passport that has not expired.
Access to federal buildings may vary
Most non-military federal buildings (e.g., immigration office, federal court) accept passports as 'alternative documents', but security policies may differ by building, requiring additional visitor registration or appointment confirmations. For visits to key facilities (research institutes, military installations, etc.), prior approval, badge issuance, and U.S.-issued ID may be required, so it is safer to check with the visiting institution in advance.
