Satellite images show that buildings that were once intact have disappeared after the earthquake in Venezuela, leaving only massive piles of concrete. It's hard to believe it's the same location.
Venezuela has experienced strong earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5, causing significant damage in the western region, including the capital Caracas.
This earthquake is the most powerful to hit Venezuela in over a century, and the scale of the damage continues to grow.
As of now, the official death toll stands at a minimum of 589, with injuries exceeding 2,000.
However, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has indicated that the final death toll could exceed 10,000.
The most heartbreaking aspect is that many people are still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
Rescue teams and volunteers are tirelessly searching for survivors, but the golden time is rapidly diminishing.
A citizen involved in the rescue efforts, Daniela Guerra, expressed her sorrow, saying, "The most critical time has already passed."
The scene of the rescue operation resembles a war zone. Rescue workers and ordinary citizens are using shovels and their bare hands to clear concrete debris in search of survivors.
Many volunteers have injured their hands while working without gloves. There is also a shortage of heavy machinery, with some equipment being brought in by civilians to assist in the rescue efforts.
In La Guaira, volunteers who heard a baby's cries beneath the rubble managed to rescue the infant safely after clearing debris with their bare hands.
Everyone present reportedly shed tears and applauded. All hope for more small miracles to continue.
Another survivor, Mora, clung tightly to a door frame as the building began to collapse, breaking her arm in the process but managing to save her life. She recounted, "It happened so fast that I didn't even have time to cry."
However, the healthcare system has already reached its limits. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and medical staff are struggling to cope with the influx of patients. There are serious concerns about shortages of medical supplies and equipment.
The government has declared a national emergency. Operations at Caracas International Airport have been suspended, and subway and train services have also been halted.
Schools are closed for the remainder of the week.
Thousands of residents who have lost their homes are spending nights in parks, along roadsides, or in temporary tents, with the suffering of children and the elderly becoming more severe.
In La Guaira, approximately 70,000 households have been reported affected. The search for missing persons continues. A site created by families to track missing individuals currently lists over 50,000 people as missing, with about 8,000 confirmed safe so far. However, tens of thousands remain unaccounted for, causing anguish for their families.
The international community has also begun to provide emergency assistance. The U.S. has dispatched a senior general from the Southern Command to oversee relief efforts, and President Donald Trump has stated that the U.S. is ready to provide necessary support.
Citizens from Brazil, Spain, Italy, China, and other countries have also been confirmed dead or missing due to the earthquake, prompting their governments to take action to protect and assist their nationals.
The earthquake destroyed the city in just a few seconds, but recovery is expected to take years.
Even now, someone may be waiting for rescue beneath the rubble.
Rescue workers continue their desperate search, believing that "as long as we don't give up, there is hope," striving to save even one more life.
