When I first moved to Irving, the most confusing thing was the structure of the administrative districts.
Even though it's all Irving, I had no idea why there were so many zip codes or which council district my neighborhood belonged to.
In fact, it's not that difficult once you understand it, but at first, it really felt like a maze.
Irving has a total of 17 zip codes, including 12 primary codes.
The main zip codes are 75038, 75039, 75060, 75061, 75062, and 75063.
75038 is considered one of the most diverse zip codes in the United States.
75039 includes the Las Colinas urban area, which has a strong business district character.
75060 is close to the Dallas border and has a diverse population with a high demand for bilingual education.
75063 includes planned residential areas like Valley Ranch.
Looking at Irving's main neighborhoods, we have Las Colinas, Valley Ranch, Heritage District, and Arts District.
Las Colinas is a large master-planned community located in the northern part of Irving, serving as a business hub with global corporate headquarters and a city-within-a-city feel with upscale condos and restaurants.
Valley Ranch is a planned residential area developed in the 1970s and 80s, located in the northwest part of Irving, characterized by a quiet and orderly suburban atmosphere. The Heritage District is the historical downtown area of Irving, featuring old commercial buildings and spaces for local community events.
Irving's city council districts are divided into a total of 8 districts. The election method is that the mayor and districts 2 and 8 are elected at-large (by the entire city electorate), while the remaining districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are single-member districts (elected by residents of those districts). You can check the exact district boundary map at irvingtx.gov/council-district-maps.
Knowing which district I belong to helps me identify who my local council member is and allows me to communicate local issues directly.
Understanding the administrative district structure is not just about geography.
Where to find a home, which school district you're in, and what services you can access all depend on this district structure.
Realizing that Irving is not uniform allows for smarter choices. I believe that making decisions based on data is much better than relying on intuition.
