The population of Fort Worth surpassed 1 million in 2024. Becoming a city of 1 million is a sign of growth, but it also highlights the need to read crime data accurately. As the city grows, absolute numbers increase, and looking at numbers without context can lead to misunderstandings.
Starting with the murder count, there were about 75 murders in Fort Worth in 2024. This is a decrease of about 12% compared to approximately 86 in 2023. The downward trend is positive. However, looking at early 2025 data raises alarms again. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, there were 20 murders, more than double the 9 during the same period in 2024. Even if the annual trend improves, patterns that concentrate during specific times require separate analysis. Most motivations were found to be domestic violence and personal disputes.
Vehicle theft is honestly at a serious level. With 5,121 incidents annually, that's 513 per 100,000 people, ranking among the highest in the nation. This number is not just a statistic; it affects real life, from parking habits to insurance choices. This data shows that choosing underground parking or gated communities is not without reason.
Overall property crime increased by 2% compared to the previous year. Specifically, in the fourth quarter of 2024, robbery increased by 14.4% year-over-year, and theft rose by 5.3%. The pattern of increasing property crime as population grows and economic disparities widen is common in major U.S. cities. Fort Worth is no exception.
My conclusion from looking at this data is simple. Fort Worth is a livable city, but we must not take safety for granted.
Awareness of vehicle theft, checking crime data when choosing neighborhoods, and basic defensive measures like fencing or security cameras are not options but necessities. Knowing the numbers is already the beginning of prevention.
