Among the cases I've looked at, there was one where a family bought a house in Baton Rouge based solely on the high scores of a nearby magnet school and decided to move. However, their child was unable to attend that school. This is because magnet schools are not assigned based solely on address.
Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School is one of the top schools in Baton Rouge, receiving a score of 10 from GreatSchools. However, this school accepts applications from the entire East Baton Rouge school district and selects students through a lottery system. For kindergarten through third grade, there is an additional academic assessment after the lottery. This means that just living nearby does not guarantee assignment to the school.
There's one more point I'd like to highlight. The scores include indicators of growth and equity. Growth measures how much students' skills have improved compared to the previous year, while equity looks at how much the gap between low-income students and their peers has narrowed. If you judge a school solely based on test scores, you may miss these trends of change.
Even within the same area, Woodlawn Elementary School has a score of 8, Wedgewood Elementary School has a score of 7, Park Forest Elementary School has a score of 6, and Broadmoor Elementary School has a score of 5. Most of these schools are general public schools assigned based on residency. Since there is a mix of magnet schools and general public schools, it's easy to overlook the actual assignment process if you only look at scores.
In my consultations, I often find families who miss the application period for magnet schools and end up sending their children to nearby district schools. Therefore, if you are interested in a magnet school, I recommend marking the application period on your calendar. The East Baton Rouge school district announces information about the magnet program every fall, so not missing that timing is the first step. There's no need to be disappointed if you miss the application. Among the general district schools based on residency, there are also schools that are steadily improving their ratings, so it would be good to keep an eye on those trends. I have met families who initially insisted on only magnet schools but eventually settled happily into a general district school that was consistently improving its ratings.
So, when you go house hunting, I recommend checking in the following order. First, determine whether the school is a general district school assigned based on residency or a magnet school that requires application and lottery. Next, check the school profile to see what the GreatSchools score is based on—test scores, college readiness, or equity indicators. Finally, look at whether the ratings have been trending upward or downward in recent years.
It's also good to pay attention to the student-to-teacher ratio and parent reviews. A single score cannot convey the actual atmosphere inside the classroom. Reviews often contain stories that numbers cannot capture, such as commuting conditions or communication with teachers.
Baton Rouge is a city with a steady interest in school districts due to Louisiana State University being located there. If you are a Korean family considering a home, I recommend checking which school district the address belongs to and whether the school you are interested in is a magnet or a general school.
If you are moving to Louisiana, please also note that the way property taxes and homeowners insurance are calculated may differ from the state you previously lived in. In particular, in this area, insurance premiums can vary significantly depending on flood insurance, so it's important to check this as thoroughly as the school district.
This article is not investment or legal advice, and I recommend contacting the relevant school district and professionals directly before making any contracts or school applications.
