When considering where to live after retirement, Detroit may not be the first choice that comes to mind.
However, narrowing it down to the suburban areas changes the conversation. Suburbs in Oakland County, such as Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, and Troy, offer access to healthcare, cultural facilities, and good restaurants, making them a decent option for seniors with financial means.
In terms of healthcare, the previously mentioned Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health (Beaumont) systems operate hospitals and clinics throughout the suburbs, providing sufficient infrastructure for specialized care for the elderly. Senior living options are also diverse in Oakland County, with various facilities for Independent Living, Assisted Living, and CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Communities) available in places like Bloomfield Hills, Troy, and Rochester Hills.
From a financial perspective, Michigan offers tax benefits for seniors. Programs like the Homestead Property Tax Credit and Circuit Breaker allow for refunds if property tax burdens exceed a certain level relative to income. Additionally, housing prices are significantly lower compared to California or New York, allowing for larger and better homes within the same budget.
There are downsides as well. Crime remains a concern in downtown Detroit, and while public transportation is available through the DDOT buses in the city and SMART buses in the suburbs, routes and frequency are limited. Living without a car can be quite challenging.
Therefore, it's important to plan for transportation options when you reach an age where driving may become difficult. The harsh winter weather, with significant snowfall, also poses mobility challenges during that time. By understanding these practical conditions and choosing a suburban area, Metro Detroit can be a more reasonable retirement destination than one might expect.
